Message from the CEO

Hello good people,

I hope this finds you all well and in good spirits.

Welcome to another Everglow newsletter.

In providing a voice for clients, I met with Herbert MP and Veteran Phillip Thompson OAM to discuss how the Australian Government can better support aged veterans and war widows to ensure they can safely stay independent in their own homes for longer. In the hope of enacting positive change.

I advised him that there is a cohort of veterans and war widows who have been forgotten in the transition from the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) to My Aged Care, which is compulsory once they reach the age of 65.

Unfortunately, they are then put back at the bottom of the queue and have to start all over again with lengthy assessment and approvals processes. It means services such as domestic assistance, personal care and safety-related home and garden maintenance are being put on hold while veterans and war widows are forced to the back of a waiting queue.

The situation makes no sense, particularly for those who in many cases have been receiving government services and assistance for many years’ prior under DVA.

With the COVID-19 pandemic isolating our aged veterans and war widows even further, the         in-house services provided by government have never been more important to mental health, self-esteem and general feelings of self-worth.

Everglow would like to see the Australian Government seriously consider implementing a transitional framework from DVA to My Aged Care to streamline the process and make it as easy as possible.

We have elderly veterans who have served their nation in Vietnam and Korea, as well as many war widows, who are waiting needlessly and without the appropriate levels of support to help them to navigate a system that is really quite complex.

Phillip was very concerned and very accommodating in raising these concerns with his parliamentary colleagues. As such, he immediately wrote to both the Federal Minister for Veteran’s Affairs and Aged Care and Senior Australians requesting further information.

As always, I welcome any feedback from you in relation to your services or any opportunities for improvement.

Until next month, stay safe.

Wayne
