Rich nations have pledged to pay $100 billion a year into a Green Climate Fund to help the most vulnerable nations cope with climate change. However, four years on, not only has the fund received only a small portion of that money, but just 18% of its funds went to projects in the poorest countries. Funding is tied to “investment opportunities”, say Sennan Mattar and colleagues, so the most vulnerable countries still struggle to access
climate finance. Environment academics have also looked at the spread of infectious diseases now that wildlife cannot hide from
humans, heat-tolerant “super-corals” that can rebuild reefs, and why idling your car may actually cut air pollution.
Negative emotions can help people overcome life’s difficulties, but a new study suggests that they have different effects. Anger was found to be associated with chronic inflammation and ill health in people over the age of 79, while no such association was found for sadness. Louise Brown Nicholls explores the possible reasons for this difference.
When you lose one sense, the remaining senses tend to heighten. Similarly, when you lose a body part, the sensory power of nearby limbs seems to increase. But whether that is down to the brain reorganising itself or simply our increased reliance on remaining body parts has remained unclear. Now a new experimental study has come up with an answer. Harriet Dempsey-Jones explains how the results may help stroke survivors.
Amid the football euphoria which has accompanied the dramatic feats performed by big English clubs this week, spare a thought for the teams who have experienced precious little glory this season. Among them, explains Mark Orton, is Bolton Wanderers, a club set to be placed into administration, where players threatened to go on strike for their wages.
