Message from the CEO

Hello good people,

I hope this finds you all well and in good spirits.

Welcome to another Everglow newsletter.

This month, I was approached by the media to provide a response in relation to the Government’s announcement that more than 6,100 older Australians will live independently for longer following a $325.7 million investment in new home care packages by the Morrison Government.

Please find below my response:

“Everglow welcomes the Government's commitment of 6,105 extra Home Care Packages (HCP) but says a greater commitment to a clear and immediate strategy to reduce the HCP wait time to three months is required. This drip release of packages is only prolonging the inevitable for the Government. The queue for assigned packages continues to be not addressed and is of great concern, with some of the wait times for high-level home care being over a year and as great as two years. There must be significant continuing investment to reduce the national wait list and meet the needs of older Australians.

In addition there also needs to greater focus on increasing funding hours to existing Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) providers due to the continued extension of this program. Providers are facing greater demand from clients and support to HCP clients without receiving any form of substantial increase in block funding for services due to increased demand. Being part of an industry that looks after more than 1.3 million Australians, Everglow is committed to the continuing care of older Australians now – and suggests greater support is needed for the Aged in the upcoming October Budget.”

I will continue to advocate on behalf of members to ensure you are assigned a package in an acceptable time frame.

As always, I welcome any feedback from you in relation to your services or any opportunities for improvement.

Until next month, stay safe.

Wayne

Kurts Corner - Home Maintenance Team

Hi Everyone,

Seems like Townsville Dome is back into full swing and with the cooler weather our plants and grass have slowed down. It is still important to keep the water up or we may very well to be Brownsville again. I know I cant talk my yard is more dirt and bindi than grass, that is easily fixed with a bit of water. Bindi really does not like water, as the grass gets browner up my notice a weed with little white flower on it, that may be bindi. You can buy poison for it or you can dig it up but why pit in excess money and effort in when sitting in lawn chair with the hose in one hand a coldie in the other works just as well if not better. If you have any question feel free to ring me on      0456 654 363 .

Keep moving, breathing and having fun

The regular Everglow Gentle Exercise classes at the spacious Railway Estate Community Centre have been attended by many over the last weeks since classes recommenced. Participating regularly in gentle exercise classes builds physical strength and flexibility and helps clients stay energised and active in their daily life. The 1 hour exercise classes are followed by a lovely and delicious morning tea, giving everyone time to connect and talk.

We recently practiced alternate nostril breathing together, which is a subtle energy-clearing yogic breath technique. This breath technique is used to relax mind and body, reduce stress and anxiety and help us focus in our life. It also helps improve lung function and respiratory endurance, which in turn improves physical performance. Studies have further found that alternate nostril breathing improves cardiovascular function by lowering heart rte and blood pressure.

To keep our lungs fit and resilient it is important to check in with ourselves and notice our breathing patterns. Doing yogic breath exercises such as alternate nostril breathing even just a few minutes a day will greatly improve breath awareness and can feel quite invigorating and energising. To learn this breath technique and many more, join us at gentle exercise every Monday at 9:30am with Rike and Fridays at 9:30am and 11:00am with Tracey.
