New treks and updated treks

Behind the scenes, I have been busy tweaking this year's treks for the people booked.

In Ladakh, the Peaks & Passes has been extended to Tso Kar so is now Peak, Passes & Lakes with a special newsletter price. The Zanskar Traverse is full so I have added another cracker 28 day Zanskar Canyons  trek that makes history; read on to find why.

In Nepal, the Makalu trek is now confirmed and Paul Murrill+ welcome some more company. Details below!

Upper Dolpo Magic

The interest level has been heartening, and commitments to the trek are coming in. If this is the trek for you, claim your place soon as I expect this trek to fill.

Zanskar Canyons

It suddenly hit me after noticing that no major trekking companies run the Zanskar trek anymore; it is too complicated for them to run. A Zanskar itinerary must be adapted year after year, and that is work a head office cannot be bothered with. We, on the other hand, roll with this...

Hence the Zanskar Canyons after a Gaye didn't find a trek within her constraints. It is a marriage of the Kanji Canyons and our Zanskar trek, a totally wonderful late season itinerary.

This trek and the (full) Zanskar Traverse are, in all honesty, obituaries for the Shingo La too, the once very popular route into the upper Zanskar valley. In a year or two, a road will cross the pass and link into Zanskar proper (ie Padum) and in an instant become the best cycling route ever. And that is on my list already!

Peaks, Passes & Lakes

The delightful short yet sweet Ladakh Peaks & Passes has an extension that really is worthy of its own name and trek page. After a resupply of fresh food, we explore wilderness wolf and snow leopard valleys to a high pass across to what was once the biggest village of Ladakh, Gya, which means 100 houses. We have a good look around in the high country (and a quick optional 6000m snow peak for the keen) then cross the Leh-Manali highway at Rumtse to continue over a couple of passes to the big sky Changtang and famed Tso Kar, so a trek of real balance and variety.

There is a special newsletter only price of US$2980 available for bookings soon.

Makalu trek

Suddenly, the trekking version of the Makalu trek has become more appealing with a brand new trail constructed that acts as an escape route and enlivens the trek with a different exit route.

Slowly, this big mountain area is turning into a teahouse trek, however, the lodges are still distinctly basic and there aren't yet any on the new exit route either, so this is a full service, comfortable camping trek with Bali or Dawa as guide, and I will send off the team from Kathmandu (having been there in the spring, and taking a better photo to).

The trek has morphed from a private departure to an open fixed price trek as Paul Murrill and Bill are happy to have company. Care to join them?

2012 Kanji Canyons album

Ladakh Photo gallery

I have a couple of new albums up on Flickr, trek memories that are such a pleasure to put together, reliving adventures.

Above, is from our 2012 Kanji trek, and we started with the now rarely trekked spectacular Shilla canyon, definitely adventurous and also sound acclimatization. The second is a reworked album from an older trek across Zanskar in memory of Joel. Together, these combine to form the Zanskar Canyons...

And I will finish some 2015 trek albums for the next newsletter; the header photo is a taster!
