Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the Beer Institute’s March 2017 Import-Export Report, which is based on information reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Below are some of the report's highlights:

Imports

  • Imported beer volume was up 2.2% in March 2017, compared to March 2016.
  • Imports are now up 3.3% year-to-date through March and up 5.9% over the last 12 months.
  • Mexican and Dutch imports were up 2.4% and 2% respectively.  They also showed similar trends last March, when they were up 13% and 12% respectively.
  • German and Belgian volumes moved in opposite directions this month, but their combined volume grew by about 21%. Many suppliers export bulk beer from one of these countries to the other before packaging and/or re-exporting.
  • Irish and British import volumes were each down double digits this March, after having each declined double digits last March also.
  • Volume of NA beer imported into the U.S. was down 42% in March and is now down 10% year-to-date.
  • Imported cider volume was down 44% in March after having been up 43% in February. They are now up 10% year-to-date.

Exports

  • U.S. beer export volume was up 27% in March. Exports have grown at double-digit rates in each of the last three months.
  • Growth in exports is not concentrated in one region. Most of the top export destinations like Mexico, Chile, Canada, Taiwan, the U.K., and Columbia are all up double or triple digits year-to-date.
  • However, exports to Panama and Australia, which were the #4 and #6 destinations for U.S. beer exports in 2016, are each down double digits.
  • Exports of NA beer are up about 300% year-to-date through March. About one third of that growth has come from Columbia, which has very quickly become America’s #1 destination for exported NA beer.
  • U.S. cider exports are flat year-to-date through March. A major driver for this is a 25% decline in the volume of cider sent to Canada.
