Editor's note

This evening, six of the seven continents will experience the longest lunar eclipse this century. From fake kings and celestial jaguars, to the decapitated head of an immortal demon, Daniel Brown explores the many, many myths behind the “blood moon”, and why the phrase is a thorn in the side of science.

Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives and scientists have been wondering what clues their behaviour might give to our own human origins. These great apes learn to build carefully crafted nests to sleep in each night and Alexander Piel and Fiona Stewart have observed how construction techniques are adapted for different conditions. They argue that such platforms built by our early ancestors would have provided the safe shelter that allowed for transformative evolutionary moments.

Swedish student Elin Errson is being celebrated around the world after refusing to take a seat on a flight from Gothenburg to Istanbul until a refugee being deported was allowed to leave the aircraft. Philosopher Sorin Baiasu applauds her bravery, and recalls the famous words of a first-century Jewish sage: “If not us, who? If not now, when?”
