On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 earthquake ripped apart the nation of Haiti. This was the first major earthquake to strike the island nation of Haiti in 200 years…and the devastation was incomprehensible. In a few short moments, life forever changed for this nation where 230,000 lives were lost. Eventually, we would discover that Hope Force International (HFI) was destined to remain engaged in the relief, recovery and ongoing rebuilding efforts--making a longstanding commitment to the nation and it’s people.

The morning after the quake, we were in communication with our good friend, Stephen Bauman, now CEO of World Relief. He invited us to consider partnering with them at a hospital located fairly close to the airport, where we provided orthopedic surgical teams for several weeks. Through Hope Force International’s ongoing collaboration with Smith & Nephew -- a large manufacturer of orthopedic products -- a significant inventory of ortho supplies was already available for rapid deployment. This generous company then provided additional product – worth several million dollars – and included a sizable financial donation to help with transport and distribution.

HFI deployed orthopedic surgical teams into Port au Prince, as well as a team of 19 medical professionals responsible for standing up a field hospital near the epicenter of the quake. For weeks, medical volunteers and support personnel made the arduous trip to Haiti; some overland through the Dominican Republic, and others transported by US military and commercial flights.

In these past five years, much has been accomplished…yet there still remains an overwhelming need for help. We invite you to read the attached “reflections” from a few who were intimately involved in our initial response. Their heartfelt remembrances resurrect feelings and memories of a very troubled time, yet one in which the grace and love of God was displayed through His people. As you read, please pray for all that is needed for the unfinished task ahead, and for those dedicated to serve as a reflection of God’s great love and care for the hurting.

Five years ago today, I remember driving into Haiti from the Dominican Republic in a jeep surrounded by gas cans, thinking that it’s going to be really bad if we get in an accident. I remember... crossing into Haiti and into chaos. I remember...arriving at King’s Hospital and seeing the grounds covered with injured people. I remember...feeling overwhelmed. CLICK HERE To read the stirring remembrances of Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Tim Browne

Most of us remember where we were when we heard the news of the terrible quake that had just hit Haiti. I knew instantly that Hope Force would be going as I began praying and seeking the Lord's direction about where I was to land in this... CLICK HERE To read heart-warming reflections from HFI Reservist, Glenda Alexander

Finally, we want to share with you about a very exciting initiative that is being launched today! The goal is to raise funds to build a desperately needed school facility near our adopted and beloved village of Sous Savanne, replacing the school that was lost in the 2010 quake. “The School Sessions” is an effort to recruit 500 photographers across North America and beyond -- willing to donate proceeds from one photography session.  A single session typically costs about $400, and the goal is to raise $200,000. Be inspired as you watch the video, and help us spread the word! Check the website out to watch the moving video and learn how you can get involved!   www.theschoolsessions.com
