A Message from the Chair

Dear Friends,

I am hoping this message finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy during this difficult time.  The events of this past year – pandemic, racial tensions, political division and unrest – have been challenging for all of us.

The strain has been especially heavy for those of us in healthcare as we have been at the front lines of personal risk and witness to the tragic impact of COVID-19. READ MORE

 

Expanded Scope of Patient Care

Head and Neck Oncology

The Division of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Reconstruction has greatly expanded its program in recent years, to further clinical, research, and educational missions.

Otolaryngic Allergy Program

Otolaryngic allergy services are now available at Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Center for Advanced Care. Armed with an extensive medical and surgical knowledge base of otolaryngic disease processes, Dr. Southwood can extend management of allergic ENT disorders to involve allergy testing, patient education, and discussion and initiation of various treatment modalities. READ MORE

Otoclinomics

As the practice of medicine is undergoing a shift from focusing on populations, a central tenet of evidence-based medicine, there is increasing indication that even seemingly straight-forward conditions can present and respond very differently from person to person. READ MORE

COVID-19: Reflections

We began 2020 bright-eyed and eager, with resolutions to achieve and goals to accomplish in the new year and the new decade. Although by January 2020, we were hearing rumblings of a strange virus taking hold in Wuhan, China, the threat this posed to our everyday existence seemed distant. READ MORE

Diversity – A Resident's Perspective

NEW - Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship

The Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is proud to announce a fellowship at MCW that offers comprehensive training in the full breadth of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and microvascular reconstruction, including surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures, functional and aesthetic rhinoplasty, aging face surgery, facial reanimation, skin cancer reconstruction, facial trauma, microvascular reconstruction, congenital abnormalities, and vascular anomalies. Faculty Highlights

John Rhee, MD, MPH ’04 is currently serving a term as President of the Board of Directors for the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Rhee’s tenure has been very eventful with the first virtual exams and initiation of sub-certification in complex pediatric otolaryngology.

Michael Stadler, MD became the Chief Medical Officer of Froedtert Hospital and Medical College of Wisconsin Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs effective July 2020 amid a global pandemic. Dr. Stadler’s commitment to leadership and patient care is endless.

Valerie Flanary, MD GME ’94 FEL ’95 was appointed Director of Racial Equity and Inclusion for the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion in January 2021, an admirable commission amid national racial injustice.

Stephen Conley, MD retired from practice in June 2020. Dr. Conley was a pediatric otolaryngologist at Children’s Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin since 1989. His commitment to teaching and patient care over the years is much-admired by both colleagues and learners.

Residency Update

 

The past year-and-a-half brought change to the MCW otolaryngology residency program, both in leadership and adaptability. Dr. Thomas Robey transitioned into the role of Program Director, following Dr. David Poetker’s GME ’06 reign of almost nine years. 

The resident’s entire educational curriculum was revamped to consist of a three-hour protected education block on Tuesday afternoons, including didactics that cover all subspecialties, humanities, global health, business of medicine, patient safety and quality improvement, research, Journal Club, M&M, Grand Rounds, mock orals, in-service preparation, and various hands-on labs and courses.
