BOFA

BOFA shows films from all over the world, but there’s always a strong focus on Australian films and film makers. 13 of this year’s movies are Australian – that’s one third of our programme – not to mention close to 40 Australian short films.....Aussie film making is alive and well!

FRIENDS OF THE FESTIVAL – RECOGNISE

AUSSIE BOFA is supported by Recognise Tasmania. RECOGNISE is the people’s movement to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Australian Constitution and ensure there’s no place in it for racial discrimination. A quarter of a million Australians from all walks of life have already declared their support to recognise the first Australians in our founding document and to fix the racial discrimination that still exists in it today. BOFA is proud to partner with Recognise Tasmania in bringing you the best of new Aussie films.

HOW DO WE GET TO SPACE?
FREE SCREENING – HOW DO WE GET TO SPACE?

Deep in the Pilbara desert of Western Australia, an unlikely group of 11-year olds create the world’s first Aboriginal interactive comic book, NEOMAD. They are seen as problem kids with too much energy and nothing to do, but when arts company Big hART come to town, they seize the opportunity to show the world who they really are. How do we get to Space? captures the arguments, pranks, computer wizardry, and grand fantastical vision as the young artists transform themselves into the heroes of their own epic sci-fi adventure, taking them to the neon lights of South Korea’s Bucheon International Comics Festival.

HOW DO WE GET TO SPACE? is a Big hART project and is presented in partnership with BOFA 2016.

ZACH’S CEREMONY
ZACH’S CEREMONY

Director Aaron Petersen (not the actor Aaron Pedersen) will be a special guest at BOFA 2016. He took 10 years to film this extraordinary, feature-length documentary that shows one boy’s journey to manhood. Its themes are universal: that of family and connection, but the film also explores the fascinating question of what it means to be a modern man belonging to the oldest living culture on earth. Aaron Petersen’s camera followed Zach from the age of 10 to 16 as he moves between the city and his ancestral country, and offers a rare and privileged glimpse of Aboriginal ceremony and ritual.

THURSDAY  1pm. ANNEXE THEATRE (with Director’s Q & A)

SATURDAY  4.45pm  TRAMSHEDS THEATRE  (with Director’s Q & A)

KILLING GROUND
KILLING GROUND

An outstanding  first feature from Tasmanian born writer/director Damien Power, who will be a guest at BOFA and will talk about the film after the screening. Ian and Samantha head to a national park, and arrive at an isolated campsite to find and SUV and a tent - no sign of the occupants. As night falls and the campers fail to return, they grow increasingly uneasy. The discovery of a distressed child wandering in the woods unleashes a terrifying chain of events. Spine-chilling suspense and another electrifying performance from Aaron Pedersen, in this clever, captivating Aussie survival-thriller.

SATURDAY  7.15pm   ANNEXE THEATRE   (with Director’s Q & A)
