Gender Neutral Bathroom Week begins today

Gender Neutral Bathroom Week, April 11 – 15, provides an opportunity to engage in dialogue around gender diversity and inclusivity. As part of the awareness campaign, information will be available in the quad, and first-floor bathrooms of the following buildings will be turned into gender-neutral bathrooms:

  • Classroom Building
  • Dengerink Administration Building
  • Engineering and Computer Science Building
  • Firstenburg Student Commons
  • Library
  • Multimedia Classroom Building
  • Science and Engineering Building
  • Undergraduate Building

Signs will be posted on all gender-neutral bathrooms indicating where individuals may find the nearest gender-segregated bathrooms. For more information, contact Amanda Shannahan.

High school students on campus today

A high school leadership conference, led by Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, will be held on campus today. The invitation-only event brings approximately 150 Southwest Washington high school students to campus. Please help provide a welcoming environment for our guests.

Gender Neutral Bathroom Week events:

  • GNBW Kick-off, Noon – 2 p.m. April 12, Firstenburg Student Commons. Event includes a keynote speaker from the Northwest Gender Alliance, a GNBW panel, an art exhibit, free food and a Jeopardy game with prizes.
  • Trans* 101 Workshop, 2 – 3 p.m. April 13, Engineering and Computer Science Building, Room 105. Learn about the experiences and challenges of trans* individuals, and how you can be a more effective ally. 
  • GNBW Town Hall Meeting, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. April 19, Undergraduate Building, Room 225. Offer feedback, ask questions and engage in civil discourse to help shape future gender diversity events.

“It’s Not Easy Being Green: Fungus, Disease, And Frogs In Danger”

Amphibians are at the forefront of the global extinction crisis, and emerging fungal diseases have accounted for a surprising number of amphibian declines and extinctions. At this Science on Tap, Jonah Piovia-Scott, assistant professor of biological sciences, will talk about what these fungal pathogens are, how they kill amphibians and efforts to prevent further amphibian losses to disease. Doors open at 6 p.m. Cost is $8 in advance, $10 suggested cover at the door. Food and drinks are available for purchase.

Celebrate Earth Day, April 22, by participating in a variety of free, earth-friendly activities.

  • Earth Day Scavenger Hunt, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. April 18, Dengerink Administration Building Patio. Kick off a week of Earth Day activities with a scavenger hunt.
  • Garden Club Repotting, 1 – 2 p.m. April 18, Dengerink Administration Building Patio. Join the Garden Club in repotting the campus planters.
  • Day of Action, 1 – 4 p.m. April 19, Dengerink Administration Building, Room 129. Attend workshops about community organizing, letter writing and how to effectively contribute your time to a cause.
  • Arbor Day Celebration 2016, 2 – 3 p.m. April 20, outside Dengerink Administration Building. Attend a ceremonial tree planting with guests and honorary tree planters Daisy/Brownie Troupe #40275 from Evergreen School District.
  • Edible Plant Walk, 3 – 4 p.m. April 20, the Quad. Join Duncan Thomas as he shows us the edible plants that can be found on campus.
  • Speaker Day, 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. April 21, Dengerink Administration Building, Room 129. Join a day of talks about ecology, bees, recycling, gardening and other environmental issues.
  • Environment Fair, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. April 22, Firstenburg Student Commons. Discover earth-friendly community organizations and volunteer opportunities.
