COMMERCIAL AWARENESSLaw NewsLegal Choices website at risk as SRA tries to shake of ownership Legal sector’s consumer facing platform of information, ‘Legal Choices’, struggles to find ownership in the wake of SRA announcing the collective ownership model (which they are part of including funding for), is not appropriate for managing a cross sector, high-profile product. The Bar Standards has already withdrawn. Calls for the site to become wholly independent of regulators to widen usage, in what is described as a powerful public insight in the complexity of the legal system. Rise of the Remote Hearings- New video tech introduced to over 100 UK courts Videoconferencing infrastructure is being installed across 60 magistrates' and 48 Crown courts across the UK. These will not be used in jury trials and appropriateness will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. This comes as the opposition, Labour, called today for a more transparent justice system, by increasing use of technology in the justice system to livestream court cases, before and after the Covid 19 crisis (Bowcott (2020)). Non-jury trials, could this be the future in English criminal justice system? A prominent human rights barrister (Geoffrey Robertson QC) believes British courts could follow many Australian states who permit defendant to opt for hearings without a jury and only a judge. Currently due to Covid-19 outbreak, jury trials have been suspended (after it found hearings with juries, via online platforms, was unsuccessful). This could help clear the coronavirus backlog of cases, which waiting times to hear cases are predicted to increase by more than 70% and an estimated £55m-£110m of extra spend is needed for extra trials to take place (Syal (2020)). Yet this will require a re-think of the entire system and, of course, questions the justice of defendants. Trial by jury has previously been suspended in Northern Ireland with cases including paramilitaries, in fear of jury intimidation. Yet does the current health crisis account to reasonable grounds to suspend trial by jury?
