Alopecia Project

Alopecia Project

For the 2008-2009 academic year, Gamma Iota Sigma will be supporting the Children's Alopecia Project through various fundraising activities. These semester-long events include weekly 50/50 raffles, bake sales, and numerous other social gatherings. The Children's Alopecia Project is an organization dedicated to helping children that suffer from hair loss from any form of Alopecia. In order to achieve this, they will use the funds donated to them to promote awareness of the autoimmune disorder and raise self-esteem in those currently suffering from this disease.

The Sigma Chapter is proud to announce the successful completion of our recent World Series Ticket Raffle, a fundraising effort for the Children’s Alopecia Project (CAP). This raffle was a joint effort between the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma and Richie of Richie’s Deli, a Deli and Pizzeria serving the Temple University community since 1975.

The contest raffled off a free Richie’s Deli T-Shirt, a free Phillies World Series T-Shirt, a World Series Hat, a complete dinner from Richie’s Deli and of course a ticket to Game four of the World Series. 8th Annual Sigma Chapter Golf Outing

8th Annual Sigma Chapter Golf Outing

The purpose and mission of the Sigma Chapter is to enhance the professionalism of students, and a good part of that development comes from networking with industry professionals. In an effort to maintain a relationship with the risk management and insurance industry as well as with the alumni of the Temple University, the Sigma chapter hosts many events each semester with the specific goal of exposing our students to the professional world.

These events serve a dual purpose, as they are a catalyst to improve our members’ career development, as well as fundraisers for our chapter’s future activities and continued philanthropy. One our most successful industry networking and fundraising events is our annual Golf Outing. The Sigma Chapter’s 8th Annual Golf Outing took place on September 9th, 2008 at the Northampton Valley Country Club in Richboro PA.

Fall 2008 Senior Career Reception

Fall 2008 Senior Career Reception

On October 24, 2008, the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma hosted its annual Senior Career Reception in the Great Court of Mitten Hall. There were over 100 students graduating in December 2008 or May 2009 in Risk Management and Insurance and Actuarial Science in attendance. Over 80 industry professionals and 20 alumni of the Sigma Chapter were present to represent their respective firms. In all, thirty-four companies attended the Career Reception and had the opportunity to talk to soon-to-be graduates. From these brief meetings and the Sigma Chapter Resume Book, firms derive an interview list of potential candidates whom they feel will fit their corporate culture and ultimately become full time employees of the firm.

Scholarship Winners

The Sigma Chapter is proud to announce that nine of our members have received scholarships from the Insurance Scholarship Foundation of America. This foundation was established by the members of the National Association of Insurance Women in 1993, to provide scholarships to college students preparing for a career in the insurance industry, and for men and women working in the insurance industry seeking to improve their career opportunities. The college scholarships are awarded to juniors and seniors whose course study is working toward a degree in Insurance, Risk Management and Actuarial Science.

The foundation rewarded 168 recipients from 38 different colleges and universities. Temple University had ten scholarships awarded in total. Of the eighteen Marsh Insurance Scholars Awarded nationwide, eight were from Temple University (one of our members was awarded two scholarships!). Christine Tan not only received a Marsh Scholars Award, but was also awarded the ISFA Award of Excellence. The Sigma Chapter received the most scholarships from the Insurance Scholarship Foundation of America than any other University in the country for the 2008 - 2009 school year.
