US President Donald Trump recently bellowed that “we are stopping cold the attacks on Judeo-Christian values”. But while this may sound like a neighbourly attempt to include Judaism in a declaration of Western solidarity, Meredith Warren argues the opposite. Rather than being about inclusivity, the phrase has become a dangerous dog-whistle myth peddled by the far right in an attempt to subsume Judaism and exclude Islam.
Exactly one year ago, Americans went to the polls in one of the most dramatic elections of modern times. Today, the resulting presidency is as captivating, unpredictable and flat-out bizarre as anyone could have predicted. Liam Kennedy has been trying to make sense of Trump ever since he declared victory last November, and with three years until the next election, he offers an update on how to think about him today.
Our relationship with nature, many think, has broken down. From climate change to dwindling woodlands, the symptoms of this are visible everywhere. This is why, according to Tristan Moyle, we need to formulate a new philosophy of trees.
