South portion of Bricktown Canal to close for I-40 demolitionThe southernmost leg of the Bricktown Canal and adjoining sidewalks will close beginning July 17 so contractors with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation can begin work in the area to deconstruct the old I-40 crosstown highway and bridge as part of the I-40 realignment project. Crews will close off the canal and sidewalks south of the small vehicle bridge across from the Marriott Residence Inn in Lower Bricktown. The canal is expected to reopen on August 16. During construction, visitors will still be able to access the Centennial Land Run Statue located on the south leg of the canal by driving through the Bass Pro Shop parking lot. The canal closing will not affect any parking areas, or restaurant or retail operations. The popular Bricktown Water Taxi will continue its normal operating hours, 9:00 – midnight daily, weather permitting. Full canal tours may be slightly adjusted during the construction period, but all-day passes will still be honored, and Water Taxi will still be able to pick up and drop off passengers at the Bass Pro and Residence Inn stopping points. Protective equipment will be used under the highway to minimize debris dropping into the canal and onto the sidewalks. For more information, contact the Oklahoma City Parks & Recreation Department at 297-3882.
