If you haven’t picked up a comic since you were a kid, it’s time to check in with one of our oldest and most effective forms of storytelling. Today, comics researcher Gabriel Clark is sharing ten of the best Australian literary comics, which tackle issues ranging from true crime to environmental ruin to life in detention.

Clark says Australian comics producers punch above their weight internationally, and with the Man Booker Prize long list featuring a graphic novel, there’s growing recognition of the power of comics to deliver a narrative punch.
