For young women living on the outskirts of Delhi, having a personal mobile phone gives them freedom to step outside the home, and its constraining gender roles. Researcher Ayona Datta set up a WhatsApp group and invited 11 women to submit multimedia “diary entries” over the course of six months, to understand how they’re using technology to navigate the city. Here, she explains how the humble selfie became a window into the lives of these women, as they discover the joys and dangers of journeying through the male-dominated urban realm.

Since Abiy Ahmed took over the helm in Ethiopia a great deal has been said about his reform agenda and the sweeping changes he continues to make.
