Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the Beer Institute’s June 2017 Import-Export Report, which is based on information reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Note: We fixed the broken link. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Below are some of the report's highlights:

Imports

  • U.S. beer import volume increased by 0.4% in June 2017 compared to June 2016
  • Imports are now up 0.3% year-to-date through June and up 2.9% over the last 12 months.
  • Mexican import volume increased by 2.7% compared to June 2016, which had been up 15% compared to June 2015.
  • Dutch and Canadian imports were down 5.2% and 8.5% respectively in June.
  • Belgian and German imports were down 18% jointly.  Note that these two countries should generally be combined due to trans-shipping between them.
  • The U.K. and Ireland should generally also be analyzed together, and their combined volume was up 12.8% in June.
  • NA beer imports were up 41.5% in June on a base of 12,000 barrels, following three consecutive months of steep declines.
  • Performance among imported ciders were essentially the opposite – down 51.6% in June on a base of 36,600 barrels, following two consecutive months of strong growth.

Exports

  • Exported beer volume was down 4.3% in June, the third straight month of export declines, but exports are still positive year-to-date due to a very strong first quarter.
  • NA exports were up 568% in June on a base of 1,600 barrels and 353% year-to-date on a base of 21,000 barrels.
  • Cider exports were down 12.8% in June and are now flat at 0.0% year-to-date.
