Ian Webster Scholarship awarded

Now in its second year, the Ian Webster Scholarship aims to build leadership and management capacity in the AOD sector, and pays tribute to one of the sector’s leading lights and former FARE chairman Emeritus Professor Ian Webster.

Western Australia has dominated this year’s prestigious Ian Webster Scholarship, with two of the State’s brightest up and coming health professionals recognised for their long-term commitment to the Alcohol and other Drug sector.

Tom Shalders, Don’t Drink and Drown Coordinator with the Royal Life Saving Society WA, used the award to attend the World Conference on Drowning Prevention in Potsdam, Germany earlier this month.

The joint recipient Julia Stafford, Executive Officer with the McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol and Youth will use her $10,000 scholarship to interview leaders in the AoD sector, both in Australia and overseas to further her understanding of alcohol advocacy.

Save Our Streets

How many is too many?

50,000 is too many. That’s the number of hospitalisations caused by alcohol each year in NSW.

The NSW Government is currently reviewing the laws relating to alcohol.

Save our Streets is a campaign calling on the NSW Premier to act now to introduce meaningful changes that will result in reductions in alcohol-related harms.

By emailing the Premier of NSW, you can show him that the community is concerned about the level of alcohol-related harms in NSW and ask him to:

1.Establish a Community Defenders Office to support communities to engage with the liquor licensing system.

2.Revise the liquor licensing system to ensure greater engagement of communities in liquor licensing decisions.

3.Stop the free ride for liquor licensees by making them pay annual fees for their licenses based on the risk the venue poses to our community.

4.Abolish all 24 hour trading and close late trading licensed venues by 3.00am

We need your help, so please get involved now.

Good night to the #bestnight

This week marks the end of FARE’s #bestnight campaign as the One Direction ‘Take Me Home’ Australian Tour comes to an end.

Tonight is the last night of the tour for the FARE team and volunteers. They've spent the past month meeting young fans at 1D concerts around the country, talking to young people and their chaperones, handing out fact packs and taking photos. FARE’s video message was also played on the big screen to audiences in their thousands during the concerts.

The campaign has enjoyed a great response from the community. There's still time to get involved, come down and say "Hi" to the team if you're at the 1D show in Melbourne tonight or let us know what your #bestnight without alcohol was!

You can check out the stories, tweets and photos of people enjoying their best night without alcohol here.

June’s presentation will be a powerful demonstration of what one community can do to achieve lasting change.
