Oyster Urban Adventure

Therapeutic Associates was pleased once again to be a sponsor of the
2012 Portland Oyster Urban Adventure Race on August 18th. This event is a fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation and is like a scavenger hunt on steroids. Our clinic had a team in the race and had a blast. We ran and biked through the city and competed in many outrageous challenges along the way, including a shoe slingshot, beer pong and eating a giant Voodoo Doughnut with no hands. To see pictures and videos of our team, click here to visit our Facebook page.

Exercise Of The Month

When it comes to stretching, the legs get most of the attention, but maintaining flexibility in the arms and shoulders are also crucial. Try this one:

1. Grab your left elbow and pull your arm across your body so that your bicep is under your chin. Hold for 20 seconds and release.

2. Grab your left elbow and lift it over your head. Hold for 20 seconds and release.

Repeat these stretches on your right arm. Perform 1 – 3 times a day to help with your upper body flexibility.

Stroke Signs and Symptoms

A stroke is what we call a cerebral hemorrhage. This occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds. Stroke is one of the five leading causes of death in the United States and there are about 7 million stroke survivors in the U.S. Many who have suffered strokes are left with paralysis, sensation loss, difficulty with speech and other disabilities.

Signs and symptoms of a stroke can be very subtle and can include:

          •  Facial numbness or weakness
          •  Loss of strength or sensation in the arm and/or leg on one side
          •  Confusion or inappropriate speech
          •  Vision disturbances
          •  Difficulty walking, dizziness or loss or coordination
          •  Severe headache

For someone having a stroke, early detection and treatment is crucial to reducing the chance of death or disability.  If you think someone you know could be having a stroke, watch for these warning signs.

Remember FAST from the National Stroke Association:

Maintaining low blood pressure is the key to reducing the risk of stroke. Ideally, most adults should be close to 120/80. Numbers above that but below 140 and 90 are considered pre-hypertensive. Anything 140 and above for the top number and 90 or above on the bottom number is considered hypertension, stage 1. Over 160 (top number) or over 100 (bottom number) is considered hypertension, stage 2.

Do you know your blood pressure? If not, stop by the clinic during the month of September. We will check it for you at no cost!
