For Your Health :: Stroke
|

|
A stroke is what we call a cerebral hemorrhage. This occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds. Stroke is one of the five leading causes of death in the United States and there are about 7 million stroke survivors in the U.S. Many who have suffered strokes are left with paralysis, sensation loss, difficulty with speech and other disabilities.
Signs and symptoms of a stroke can be very subtle and can include:
• Facial numbness or weakness
• Loss of strength or sensation in the arm and/or leg on one side
• Confusion or inappropriate speech
• Vision disturbances
• Difficulty walking, dizziness or loss or coordination
• Severe headache
For someone having a stroke, early detection and treatment is crucial to reducing the chance of death or disability. If you think someone you know could be having a stroke, watch for these warning signs.
Remember FAST from the National Stroke Association:

Maintaining low blood pressure is the key to reducing the risk of stroke. Ideally, most adults should be close to 120/80. Numbers above that but below 140 and 90 are considered pre-hypertensive. Anything 140 and above for the top number and 90 or above on the bottom number is considered hypertension, stage 1. Over 160 (top number) or over 100 (bottom number) is considered hypertension, stage 2.
Do you know your blood pressure? If not, stop by the clinic during the month of September. We will check it for you at no cost!
