Buffalo LISC Spotlight: Belmont Housing Resources for WNY

 

Belmont Housing Resources for WNY is a leading advocate for quality affordable housing in Buffalo and the surrounding suburbs.  In addition to administering rental assistance programs, they offer a variety of housing-related programs and services promoting home ownership and asset building, educating renters and landlords, improving existing housing stock, as well as developing and managing affordable housing.

Founded in 1977, and starting as a Section 8 Rental Subsidy administrator, Belmont Housing now provides direct services to over 10,000 low-income households annually.

Buffalo LISC began our proud partnership with Belmont Housing in 2002 through our National Equity Fund, and we’ve expanded our work together ever since, by providing operational funding support, equity and loans.

Buffalo Promise Neighborhood Elects Community Council Leaders

The Buffalo Promise Neighborhood Community Council was formed to serve as the neighborhood liaison between the residents, and community stake-holders. The Community Council is currently collaborating with community residents and stakeholders on a neighborhood quality of life plan to make Buffalo Promise Neighborhood a great place to live, work, and play.

The BPN Community Council recently elected new council leadership to help spearhead the engagement and collaboration of the local community and continue to make strides towards fulfilling the “promise.”

PUSH Buffalo Awarded $25k to conduct Financial Opportunities Center Feasibility Study on Buffalo’s West Side.

PUSH (People United for Sustainable Housing) has been awarded a LISC Section IV FY11 Financial Opportunities Center grant of $25,000 to conduct a FOC feasibility study on the West Side of Buffalo.

As our West Side convening agency, PUSH Buffalo will use the funding to collaborate with additional community partners and evaluate the potential success of the project.

Open Buffalo Awarded Open Society Grant of $1.9 Million

A collaboration of organizations in Buffalo was selected by the Open Society Foundations to be part of a new initiative to advance justice, equity, and democratic practice in local communities.  Buffalo was one of only three regions chosen for the Open Places Initiative, on the basis of a plan crafted by four local non-profit agencies: Partnership for the Public Good, Coalition for Economic Justice, People United for Sustainable Housing (PUSH), and VOICE-Buffalo.

The initial grant is for $1.9 Million, and Open Society envisions funding each region for at least three and up to ten years.  The grants are designed to increase the capacity of local communities to bring about lasting systemic change.
