Highlight: 2016 ASBMB Grant Writing and Mentorship Workshop

The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB)'s Interactive Mentoring Activities for Grantsmanship Enhancement (IMAGE) grant writing workshop is for assistant professors and postdoctoral scientists that are preparing to transition into an independent faculty position. The workshop will be held July 14-16 in Washington, D.C. Key features of the workshop include:

  • Talks by NSF Program Directors about funding opportunities and strategies for successful proposal submission
  • Real time, constructive feedback on potential research proposals
  • A mock review panel to provide insight into the grant review process
  • Presentations on best practices for crafting a logical research plan and a creative broader impact statement
  • Practical advice on work-life balance, navigating academia and positioning your research program for sustained success
  • Networking with mentors, NSF Program Directors, and previous participants that have successfully been awarded funding
  • Access to an interactive, web-based forum for interacting with past and future participants and learning about new funding opportunities
  • Post-workshop one-on-one mentoring with a senior, funded ASBMB member.

Reminder: Career Exploration Panel: Careers in Higher Education Administration for PhD Scientists
OGPS is hosting a panel discussion featuring PhDs who work in different capacities as administrators (and some as professors too) at universities across the Northeast. Come hear about how they came to hold their positions and what you can expect if you go into this field. Sign up here to let us know you’re interested in attending and to submit questions to the panel. Tuesday, April 5 at 4:00 PM in the Joukowsky Forum (Room 155) at the Watson Institute, 111 Thayer Street.

NEW Application Process for Graduate Student Conference Travel Funding
Graduate Students applying for conference travel funding from OGPS should note the new application procedure: as of 4/1/16, paper forms will no longer be accepted as we transition to the online application. For more information, please visit our website.

NIH Updates to the Biosketch Instructions
This Notice informs the biomedical and health services research communities that in accordance with NOT-OD-16-004, the biosketch instructions and format pages have been updated. The updated instructions and formats should be used for application due dates on or after May 25, 2016. For more details, please read the full notice.

Instrumentation Resource
To help scientists identify ways to access necessary instruments that are beyond the budget of a typical research grant, FASEB developed “Instrumentation: Federal Grants and Programs for the Life Sciences.” This document provides summary information about federal agency support for apparatus acquisition, access, and development. Many of these grants and programs focus on multi-user configurations to broaden equipment utilization and extend the value of research funding.

Career Tip Central

What: DougsGuides
Who Runs It: Doug Kalish, PhD, a biologist by training who left academia to pursue opportunities in fields as varied as software engineering, lecturing, and consulting.
What it Offers: DougsGuides offers Guides (longer articles) on topics such as 'Working with Other People' and 'Finding your First Job,' as well as shorter articles like "Are you missing out on free, high-quality career advice?", links to helpful information all over the web, and outlines of his workshops.
Why It's Worth Checking Out: The Business Backgrounder guide gives a great overview of business basics for those of us who may not know much about how things work at a for-profit company, the self-assessments are insightful and detailed, and you can contact Doug (who came to speak last October at Brown) for support anytime!

Postdoc Opportunity

Postdoctoral Trainee - Molecular Immunology and Inflammation - National Institute on Aging - National Institutes of Health - Bethesda, MD

Postdoctoral positions are available in Baltimore to study (1) antibody diversity and (2) inflammation. Research on antibody diversity will focus on the molecular mechanisms that produce somatic hypermutation in antibody genes. The Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Immunology has a strong emphasis on molecular biology in relevant mouse models. The Institute sponsors state-of-the-art core facilities for lymphocyte manipulation, Illumina sequencing, and flow cytometry. More details on the research being conducted can be found at the lab website.

To be eligible for postdoctoral training in the NIH, individuals must hold a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DDS, or the equivalent) and have no more than five years of relevant research experience since receipt of their most recent doctoral degree. Career Position

Genome Engineer - Ginkgo Bioworks - Boston, MA

Ginkgo Bioworks was founded with the mission to make biology easier to engineer. At the heart of recent projects is high throughput genetic engineering across multiple species. These approaches are designed to scale 100-1000X via software and automation. Ginkgo is seeking genetic engineers to both scale existing technologies as well as define the next set of genetic technologies that will lie at the center of the next project.

The ideal candidate has led the development of a high-throughput biological process from scale-up through to successful operation, most likely for DNA synthesis or sequencing. A demonstrated ability to evolve a process in response to changing technology and demands is essential. Experience in a mixed team of software developers, process engineers, and biologists is important. Requirements include a PhD or equivalent and prior experience in one or more of the following: NGS, DNA synthesis and assembly, genome engineering. For more information on this unique company and details on how to apply to this and Ginkgo's other openings, please view the job posting.
