Greetings from your Community BoardBoard Chair, Karolin Potter Message from the ChairSchool holidays are here again and there's heaps of activities around town to keep you and the kids entertained. There are so many fantastic playgrounds, parks, walkways and the river to explore in our Spreydon-Cashmere area. I hope you can wrap up warm and get out there. We know that rubbish bins are sometimes not where they used to be. In their place, we now have some new high-tech bins that tell the Council when they're full and need to be emptied. Please do take rubbish home including dog poo if there isn’t a bin close to where you are. We will get used to the changes but our reserves, bush, parks, birds and waterways can’t get used to rubbish, especially dog poo. Please, for the kids and our wildlife, make it a habit to take it home to a red bin. Stay together, look after one another. Highlights of our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Wednesday 14 July. Some highlights of our meeting included considering options to improve safety and visibility at the intersection of Mathers Road and Cedars Street and at the intersection of Darley Street and Barrington Street. We also received the Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board Area Report for July 2021, which gives us an overview of all the great work being
done in our area. Sign up and share our newsletterSharing is caring, and we'd love you to share our newsletter on your social media channels. Community updatesLandsdowne Community Centre and Playcentre mural celebrationEarlier this year, local parents, children and supporters turned out to celebrate the installation of a colourful mural on a previously blank wall at the border of the outdoor play area in the Landsdowne Community Centre grounds. The volunteer committees had also worked with Council staff for a refresh of the landscaping. The painting of the mural by a local artist and the community celebration day were assisted by two small grants from the Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board. Lower Cashmere Residents Association – Cashmere View Park amenity improvementsThe Lower Cashmere Residents Association has thanked the Community Board for supporting the community event celebrating the installation of a picnic table and park bench in Cashmere View Park. Cobham Street Garden RejuvenationA small group of local residents have brought a community garden on the corner of Cobham and Lyttelton streets back to life, with the assistance of a small grant from the Community Board. They were able to invest in a watering system, and create a new garden bed. The rest of the garden has been cleared of weeds, and the group is learning about organic cultivation. A little income from rhubarb sales is being used towards preparing the garden for the next season. Selwyn Street Area Speed ReviewThe Council decided to lower the speed limit from 50 km/h to 30 km/h on Somerset Crescent, Willard Street, Selwyn Street (South of Brougham Street and Rosewarne Street) – signage will be installed by mid-July 2021. The original recommendation was to lower the speed limit to 40 km/h, but the Board successfully pushed for this to be lowered further. The Board also approved safety improvements at crossings for pedestrians and cyclists. Check out Have Your Say for more information. Beckenham Street/Norwood Street intersection improvementsAs part of the Innovating Streets for People pilot fund, the improvements will include: installing temporary build-out areas, pedestrian crossing point improvements, line marking, specialised coloured infill, tactile pavers and flexible delineator installation. Work will start on Monday 19 July to late July 2021 (weather dependent). Please read the Start Work Notice for more information. Matariki CelebrationThe Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Network held a Matariki celebration at South Library on Friday, 2 July (as pictured below), which the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board granted funding towards. The celebration had a range of activities and was a great success. It started with a karakia from Kaharoa Manihera, followed by beautiful performance from Beckenham School’s Kapa Haka Group and the Council’s Waiata Group. Cashmere, Hoon Hay and Worsleys intersection upgrade – Shop local, support local businessWe’re upgrading the intersection of Cashmere, Hoon Hay and Worsleys roads. Cashmere Road will be down to one lane for a few weeks, but the Cracroft shops are open for business and would love to see you! Pop in for a coffee at Silverbacks Café, milk at Cracroft Dairy, takeaways from Cracoft Fresh Fried, a trim at Hair by Bridget or 50 Shades of Fabulous, a bouquet of flowers from Shalamar Florist & Gifts, and parts for your bike at Velo Passion Project . Road widening part of Dyers Pass Road safety workUp to 1.25 metres is being added to the width of the narrowest parts of Dyers Pass Road as Christchurch City Council works to make the road safer for drivers and cyclists. Dyers Pass Road is windy and only around 5.5 to 6 metres wide in many areas, however, contractors Higgins Construction are working on behalf of Christchurch City Council to increase the width of the sealed road to a consistent 6.75 metres. E-bikes and electric cars for ŌCHT tenantsThe Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust (ŌCHT) is going to offer tenants at its new 90-home Brougham Street development in Sydenham access to two Nissan Leaf cars and five electric bikes in a two-year pilot to see how shared, low carbon transport can work for a social housing community. Fee changes coming as new budget is introducedFees and charges for some Christchurch City Council-run services and facilities will change over the coming months. The fee changes were signalled earlier this year when Christchurch City Council consulted the public on its 2021–31 Long Term Plan. Feedback sought on stormwater plansChristchurch City Council is seeking public feedback on plans to improve the way it manages the city’s stormwater. Consultation has now opened on the Council’s Ōpāwaho/Heathcote River draft stormwater management plan. Speed reviews and pedestrian crossingsWe’re making changes so it’s safer no matter how you get around your local neighbourhood in Lower Cashmere and Hoon Hay. We're also consulting on widening the existing pedestrian island to make it safer to cross Tennyson Street near Norwood Street. Visit the links to for more details and to have your say.
