Are you still buzzing?

On Orientation Day we captured the emotions of some first year students and everyone was full of positivity with "EXCITED" being the statement of the day.

Hopefully the fun hasn't stopped as you've settled into your first term study routine. University life is about making the most of every opportunity and creating lasting memories, so stick with it and enjoy every minute!

Spontaneous Tape Art reflecting the Student Volunteer Army

Some of you may have been lucky enough to witness the creation of this mural on C Block; others may have seen the completed work of art. 

If you missed out completely (or can't resist seeing it again) check out this video (YouTube). It shows the process of creating a spontaneous Tape Art mural through conversations with students from the Student Volunteer Army.

April Graduation

For those that have completed their chosen programme of study a big CONGRATULATIONS and well done!

Applications to graduate at the April 2012 graduation ceremonies are now open. The ceremonies will be held at the CBS Canterbury Arena.

Information about applying to graduate and ordering academic regalia is available on the Graduation website.

Undercroft upgrades

Café 1894 and Chilton’s are already in full swing in the Undercroft, but soon you’ll find a lot more there to keep the mind and body fuelled. Here’s a look at what’s coming up:

12 March
The Greek – Souvlakis and Greek meals.
The Cut Lunch – Have a sandwich put together with your choice of fillings.

16 April
Hot Wok – Cooked to order Asian-style vegetable/noodle/rice/protein combinations.
The Burg – A range of gourmet burgers featuring homemade patties.
The Shilling Club – A gastro bar with an upmarket beverage list and a more sophisticated range of food (at a reasonable price).

The Shed, offering a full range of hot and cold café food and espresso is now open in the Kirkwood Village.

Then over in the UCSA carpark, the new 1000-capacity Events Centre and bar is due to open in late April.

Canterbury students first to US Congress

To foster greater understanding of the American legislative system, the Washington based United States - New Zealand Council announced the launch of a new internship programme on Capitol Hill for New Zealand university students. 

Applications will be sought from advanced UC law students before being short listed by the School of Law.

The application process will be posted on the School of Law website in due course.

UCSA President, Erin Jackson
University of Canterbury Students' Association 2012 President Erin Jackson wants to enhance the student experience this year.

The new University of Canterbury Students’ Association 2012 President Erin Jackson is bursting with enthusiasm and energy about the challenges of the year ahead.

The 22-year-old, who recently graduated with a BA and LLB and began her elected role on 1 January, is planning on using that passion to create an enhanced student experience.

Erin describes her role as being a “communication channel between the student body and the University.”

Being enrolled at UC does not automatically enrol you at the Health Centre. Enrol with them as soon as you can if you think you'll be using their services. Find out more on the Health Centre website.

ICE cards
Remember to programme an ICE (In Case of Emergency) number into your phone. You can also collect an ICE card from the Central Library to record your details and carry in your wallet.

EPS (Engineering and Physical Sciences) Library
The EPS Library re-opened on Monday 20 February. Library tours and inductions are currently being offered at 11am, 2.10pm and 3.10pm every day until 9 March.

Carpooling
The University of Canterbury has a new online carpool scheme to help staff and students get to campus, save money and lower their carbon footprint.

POSTGRAD CORNER

Orientation for new PhD students
Monday 12 March
9.30-11am

A session to welcome new PhD students to the University of Canterbury. There will be staff members present from the Library, the Learning Skills Centre, UCSA, the Postgraduate Office and the Student Support Mentoring programme, as well as a representative of the Postgraduate Students’ Association (PGSA). Find out more about the academic and general support services available, meet other new PhD students and discuss common issues and experiences.

Bindery Services
The University Bindery is to close on 21 March 2012. The process for arranging for theses to be bound (soft-bound or hard-bound) will change very little for students. 

You will still be able to go to the counter in the Copy Centre at Kirkwood Avenue to place an order to have your thesis bound. These orders will be sent to a local binding company (SI McHargs) and returned. Prices for thesis binding remain unchanged.
