16 Days of Action on Violence against Women

The 16 Days campaign runs every year from 25th November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and December 10th, Human Rights Day sending the message that violence against women is a violation of women's human rights.

The European Women's Lobby have issued a press release to mark 16 Days highlighting the impact of the economic crisis on violence against women and calling on more decisive action from the EU. Read more 

UN Women have published '16 Steps to end Violence against Women' to mobilise world leaders on the issue. See 16 Steps

Gender and Asylum Roundtable - 7th December

Engender's roundtable focusing on Gender and Asylum will take place in Glasgow on 7th December.  'Gendering the Asylum Process' will discuss the need to consider gender based persecution as grounds for granting asylum. The outcome of this discussion will be used to highlight the importance of gendering asylum policy.

This event is part of Engender’s Equality Counting Project funded by the EHRC and the Scottish Government and is in preparation for Engender’s national gender conference which will take place 8th March 2012 funded by the Scottish Government.

Engender respond to Human Rights review

The Universal Periodic Review  is the mechanism by whcih the UN reviews human rights in each of the member states.  Reviews are carried out every four years and the UK will be up for scrutiny at the end of May 2012.  Non-governmental organisations can also report to the UN, highlighting areas where they feel their country is failing.  Engender have submitted a report to the UN commenting on the areas of womens participation in public life and women and childlrens poverty.  Read the Engender report

Engender also have a voice in this process through our place on the UK Joint Committee on Women.   The UKJCW have reported on three areas:- the impact on women of the governments economic policies; reproductive health access in Northern Ireland; violence against women.  Read UKJCW report

 

Abolishing corroboration may increase our rape conviction rate

The Carloway review was published last week and, as expected, recommended ending the requirement for corroboration in Scots Law.  The need for corroboration leads to many rape cases not making it to court as this is a crime which by it's nature often has no witnesses.  Rape Crisis Scotland support the move and refer to evidence that suggests that cases which the crown office believe  have a reasonable prospect of conviction are not going  ahead due to lack of corroboration.  Read more

 

 

New campaign to tackle occupational segregation

Close the Gap have a new campaign aimed at young people which challenges the gender stereotyping that leads to jobs being seen as women's or men's.  Be What You Want encourages young people to look at all the options available to them and covers issues around the gender pay gap.   The campaign has a great website with resourses for teachers and lots of information and case studies for young people and parents.  See bewhatyouwant.org

Children and Young People Outreach Worker (Temporary Maternity Cover)  17.5 hours per week
Salary £13,166 (£26,332 pro rata) + 7.5% Out of Hours payment

As a Children and Young People Outreach Worker you will develop and implement an outreach support service to children and young people in the community.  This service will be particularly aimed at children and young people who are not currently accessing support for domestic abuse issues.  You will advocate on behalf of children and young people and will identify, adapt and produce appropriate resources for support plans.

To be a Children and Young People Outreach Worker you must have experiencing of supporting children and young people in both 1-1 and group situations.  It is essential that you have a child centred approach and can engage with children and young people using a variety of resources.

The successful candidates must have a qualifications recognised for SSSC registration.  They will also have knowledge and a commitment to a feminist analysis of domestic abuse.  It is essential that candidates have knowledge of child abuse and child protection legislation.
