Click here Software updates to Massey computersOver the past month many of you would have already seen the Massey communications regarding computer software updates in the wake of the WannaCry cyber-security incident. In May, the University rushed to respond to the incident, and in July we are now returning to a more "normal" state of delivering software updates to University computers. Updates will be being applied to all Windows computers on a monthly basis. The details on delivering software updates to Massey computers and how this impacts you can be viewed here: Internet Explorer 11 updateAs part of the process of ensuring that our fleet meets the necessary security updates, ITS identified a target group of 860 machines which did not have the latest version of Internet Explorer installed. This involved a direct email to the last known user of the machine and 500 machines have now have upgraded to the latest version. The remainder will be upgraded to the latest version once they are reconnected back to the network. Apple Hardware models under constraintApple have advised us on a number of occasions that hardware is going into constraint. We have no visibility of when this may happen. We will update our catalogue accordingly so please keep an eye on these pages for changes and updates if this may affect you. Please be aware that orders that are already being processes may be affected. Priority upgrades available for Windows 7 / Office 2010 devices to Windows 10 / Office 2016As part of keeping the Massey University fleet as up to date as possible, Massey introduced Windows 10 / Office 2016 for all new computers in October 2016. There were a high number of devices that were not due for replacement but had the capacity to be upgraded to Windows 10 / Office 2016. ITS has identified these devices and has contacted staff with details on how to pull the upgrade software down to the device at their convenience. Reminders have also been sent if upgrade is not progressed, with a final date for upgrade identified. Each communication has detailed information on how the upgrade will work, with dates for the window when their update on their computer will be happening. One of the big advantages of Windows 10 is that it automatically receives significant updates with new features and upgraded security on a regular basis, usually annually. As part of this upgrade the version of Office on the machine will also be updated. Migrating to Office 2016 will improve the ability to move to newer versions of Office in the near future. SPSS at home for staff, post-graduate and undergrad studentsUnder the current process, students requesting a license will be allocated a license for the full term, or part thereof, of the annual Massey subscription which runs from 1st February to 31st January of the following year. The number of licenses available to tertiary education providers is based on the FTE numbers for students by the vendor. Demand for licenses has shown strong growth in recent years to the point where Massey University has exhausted its allocation for 2017. As a result, no further allocations can be made in 2017 until licenses that are no longer required are relinquished back into the pool. Information Technology Services have analysed information on paper requirements and identified a number of licenses that may not be required for the remainder of 2017. These students will be contacted directly and asked to relinquish their license where they have no further need for it for their study in 2017. We ask lecturers for their assistance in advising students in regard to availability of SPSS. ITS Service Desk |
