TGI offers an extensive range of questions about radio listenership... 

  • Today 87% of Irish adults listen to the radio. 84% listen Monday to Friday, 60% listen on Saturday and 54% listen on Sunday.   
     
  • Three-quarters of adults always listen to the radio when in the car and 69% listen to the radio everyday - up from 62% in 2005.   
     
  • Average length of listening on a weekday is just over 2 hours. On a Saturday it's 1.9 hours and 1.8 hours on a Sunday. 
     
  • 79% of adults listen to FM. 18% of adults listen to radio on their mobile phone and 11% - 390,000 people - listen online.  
     
  • 42% of Irish adults listen to digital radio, compared to 51% in GB.
     
  • A quarter of adults use a digital car radio and 22% have a digital radio at home. 
  • Three-quarters of adults listen to commercial radio at least once a week. The most popular times of day are lunchtime, when 42% of adults say they listen, and the morning commute 8.00 - 9.00am (40% listen).  
     
  • The most popular types of music are 80s and mainstream chart artists, with 31% of adults specially choosing to listen to each, followed by 90s (25%) and 70s (22%).   
     
  • Amongst 15-24 year-olds the most popular types are mainstream chart (51% specially choose to listen) and R&B (33%). Those who specially choose the latter are 30% more likely to agree they're tempted to buy products they've seen advertised.  
     
  • The most popular types of radio show are national news (40% of adults specially choose to listen), local news (38%), sports (27%) and music request shows (23%).  
     
  • 665,000 people specially choose to listen to shows about business / finance. They are 88% more likely to be in the AB social grades and 24% more likely to be intending to buy a car in the next 12 months. They are also 47% more likely to have an instant access savings account and 130% more likely to have a fixed term account or bonds.
