After many months of planning, we moved into the newly renovated space on the 5th floor of the Specialty Clinics building. Thanks to the work of our dedicated staff, the move went smoothly and everyone has settled into the new clinic. This has been a huge upgrade to an updated space that is larger and more easily accessible for our patients. Dr. Anjum Sayyed joined us, focusing her practice on TBI and helping to grow our brain injury program. She has a wide breadth of experience and we are very excited to have her as part of the team. The SCI team welcomed Melissa Carroll, APNP, who has returned to her rehab roots. She is seeing patients in the outpatient clinic, and also helping with chronic patients on the Inpatient side. Finally, we have recently had Michaelchad Bonnell join us as our new Clinic Manager. We look forward to his leadership as we continue to grow and optimize our clinic to serve our patients in the upcoming year. Congratulations to Dr. Mary Elizabeth Nelson for co-presenting on the African PM&R Fellowship Program with her residency co-director Hannah Steer. The Young Leaders Conference was held at the International Rehabilitation Forum at the Porter Medical Center in Middlebury, Vermont the last week in July. They had virtual participation from over twenty countries to make plans for advancing their practice in caring for people around the world who suffer from spinal cord injury, childhood illnesses, nerve diseases, arthritis, pain and other conditions. | More Information Adaptive Sports UpdateEven during the pandemic, the National Veterans Wheelchair Games (NVWG) rolled on with wheelchair athletes coming together at New York City for the 40th NVWG from August 6 through August 14, 2021. Many months of preparation went into putting together a safe event for all athletes, staff, and volunteers for a hybrid event (in-person and at-home tournament). Both Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) put together a playbook of instructions and education, daily antigen testing for everyone (over 3,300 tests completed in eight days), and computer-based contact tracing. Due to the pandemic, trainees were not allowed to participate this year. However, one of our residents, Dr. Lauren Shuda, joined as an assistant coach for our Milwaukee team because one of the coaches was unable to participate. Two MCW physicians also participated as part of the National Medical Team to provide medical care to 200+ athletes and support staff. From Milwaukee, nine athletes traveled to NYC and five participated in the “at-home” program. A total of forty two medals were won by the Milwaukee athletes (twenty six Gold, eleven Silver, and five Bronze). One of our athletes won the prestigious Spirit of the Games award this year! This makes three of such awards to date for Milwaukee. Woohoo! The majority of Dr. Shuda's last year was spent in working with patients who were recovering from being acutely ill and learning how to live their lives with new impairments. While it was rewarding to treat them and encourage their progress towards achieving inpatient goals, it is difficult to imagine what they would be doing months or years in the future. As she was able to attend the Games as a coach, this allowed her the opportunity to get to know the athletes beyond their medical charts and literally cheer them on from the sidelines during the competitions. From playing softball and basketball in the NYC summer heat and humidity, to power lifting at the top of the Rockefeller Center to expertly navigating complicated slalom courses, everything the athletes accomplished was truly incredible (just look at their medal counts!).
