Arts Council of OKC Announces New, Free Daily Arts Program

Soon, downtown visitors and workers can enjoy workday lunchtime performances, demonstrations and conversations all for free, thanks to a new program produced by the Arts Council of Oklahoma City.

The Arts Council announced a new program titled Art Moves, presented by Devon Energy.  The program will allow the community access to free daily arts programming during the workweek lunch hour. Focusing on the downtown lunchtime hotspots, Art Moves will offer up a variety of performances, art demonstrations and discussions.

On Monday, Oct. 3, the Art Moves program will kick off at Leadership Square at noon with mask artist Patrick Riley, who currently has an exhibit of works at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum in Shawnee. The demonstration will wrap up at 1pm. The October schedule is available on the Arts Council's website.

“I’m incredibly excited about our new Art Moves program – it’s going to offer arts-related programming to 30,000 people working in downtown Oklahoma City every day at lunch,” said Peter Dolese, Executive Director for the Arts Council of Oklahoma City. “This is a game changer, a real opportunity for downtown workers and visitors to get connected with the art scene in Oklahoma City without having to break out of their normal routines. We’ll catch them on their lunch break…giving them a daily dose of the arts! Our friends at Devon Energy are so generous to sponsor this program – we’re so thankful for their assistance.”

The Arts Council has more than 60 member agencies, all of whom are encouraged to participate in Art Moves, which will give those agencies the opportunity to connect with an audience otherwise not reachable.  Other artists or entities may apply to be featured by visiting the Arts Council website – applications will be accepted year-round.

“With this program, we’re able to connect the Oklahoma City Ballet with a businessman who might be sparked to buy tickets to their next show. Our member agencies and area artists are really going to make connections with a brand new audience,” said Dolese. “Art Moves is the absolute essence of our mission to bring the arts and the community together.”

Devon Tower Designer to Give Lecture

On Wednesday, Oct. 5, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art welcomes architect Jon Pickard FAIA, RIBA and his discussion “Place Purpose Form,” as part of the James C. Meade Friends’ Lecture Series.

In 2008, Devon Energy commissioned Pickard's architecture firm, Pickard Chilton, to design the company’s new corporate headquarters. Upon its completion in 2012, the iconic, 50-story, 850-foot Devon Energy Headquarters will play a significant civic role in downtown Oklahoma City. As the largest private development in Oklahoma history and the tallest building in the state, Pickard’s design will positively contribute to the public realm with a series of exterior and interior public spaces reuniting an underutilized site with the surrounding neighborhood and a major public park. Mayor Cornett cited the project as “a proud symbol of the strength and beauty of this great city.”

Friends’ lectures are free to museum members at the Friend, Friends, and Sustainer membership levels. Seating is limited to 250, and reservations are required. Prices are $5 for general membership levels and $10 for nonmembers per ticket. For more information, contact Jim Eastep at 236-3100, ext. 215, or visit tickets.okcmoa.com.

In the book, Eric Schmitt and Thom Shanker, two veteran New York Times correspondents, tell the riveting story of how a group of analysts within the military, spy agencies, and in law enforcement has fashioned innovative, more nuanced, and more effective strategies to fight terrorism—strategies that today remain unknown to most Americans.

There will be light hors d'oeuvres before the lecture and books will be available for sale and personalization after the lecture. Please RSVP to Toni Clopton, tc@oklahomacitynationalmemorial.org or 405.235.3313.

OKCMOA Presents Two New Exhibitions

Photograph of a Havana room by Michael Eastman

Last week, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art opened new exhibitions by artists Michael Eastman and Franco Mondini-Ruiz.

Faded Elegance: Photographs of Havana by Michael Eastman

OKCMOA's first, large-format photography exhibition features works by internationally-acclaimed photographer Michael Eastman. Faded Elegance: Photographs of Havana runs through Dec. 31 and consists of twenty-nine, 6 x 7 1/2 ft. photographs taken by the artist between 1999 and 2010.

For more than a decade, Eastman has captured Havana’s changing cultural landscape in his images of the city’s architecture and lush interiors, ravaged by the effects of time. His large-scale photographs evoke the nostalgia and wealth of a bygone era, while shedding light on the harsh economic realities faced in present day Cuba.  Eastman is known for his richly colored photographs, which he captures with his 4 x 5 camera. This exhibition will be the first to explore the depth and range of Eastman’s Havana photographs.

Poodles & Pastries (and Other Important Matters): New Paintings by Franco Mondini-Ruiz

Internationally-acclaimed contemporary artist Franco Mondini-Ruiz will complete a site-specific installation entitled Poodles & Pastries (And Other Important Matters): New Paintings by Franco Mondini-Ruiz at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art to be on view through Dec. 31, 2011.

The installation will include more than 750 small-scale paintings, each measuring 8 x 10 inches, and a collection of small sculptures born of Oklahoma flea markets . Whimsical subject matter includes poodles, Parisian icons, drinks, pastries, cupcakes, chandeliers, couples, and fashionable women that appear on canvases, embodying a visual extravaganza of imagery.
