The Alumni Affairs team along with Gamma Iota Sigma is proud to announce this years 2nd Alumni Newsletter. This semester proved to be very successful. We hosted many different events, and a few of them were the Beef N’ Beverage, Date Auction, and Math Competition. We also raised a significant amount of money for Neighborhood Bike Works which is a terrific program to help young children. Gamma Iota Sigma Gives Back to the Philadelphia Community

On Wednesday, April 23, 2008, Gamma Iota Sigma, the Risk, Insurance, and Healthcare Management (RIHM) student professional organization, presented a $2,500 check to Neighborhood Bike Works. Gamma’s donation to Neighborhood Bike Works was the accumulation of several semester-long fundraising projects, including a date auction, a beef n’ beverage bar event, bake sales, and weekly 50/50 raffles.

SPENCER EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Spencer Educational Foundation stimulates, promotes and encourages promising undergraduate and graduate students of risk management disciplines in fulfilling their educational goals by providing scholarship awards and educational grants. The Foundation was established in 1979 in honor of the late Robert S. Spencer. It is administered by its Board of Directors and is affiliated with the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) in New York, NY. Every year, the Foundation awards several thousand dollars in educational grants and scholarships. The Spencer Educational Foundation, Inc., established by the Atlanta Chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS), is celebrating 25 years of service to supporting risk management education at the university level. In that time, the Foundation has granted 278 scholarships amounting to $1.7 million benefiting 57 educational institutions in the United States and Canada.

Professional Exam Passers

Professional Exam Passers

For students in the risk management and actuarial science fields, passing exams given by professional societies is of critical importance to their professional development. The Department of Risk, Insurance, and Healthcare Management encourages students to take these professional exams while in school. These rigorous exams are given by various educational organizations in the risk management and actuarial science fields. Gamma Iota Sigma is proud of our students who have passed these exams recently. These include exams for the CEBS, CPCU and ARM designations. In addition, actuarial science majors take exams sponsored by the Society of Actuaries.

Risk Management and Insurance Intern Career Reception

On March 3, 2008, more than 150 students in search of a summer internship attended the Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) intern career reception held in the Great Court of Mitten Hall. The career fair was hosted by the Department of Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management and the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma. Officer and members of Gamma Iota Sigma were completely responsible for planning and executing this event.

The 6th Annual High School Math Competition

The 6th Annual High School Math Competition

On Friday, March 28, 2008, Gamma Iota Sigma held its 6th Annual High School Math Competition. This competition began as a way to promote to both high school students and faculty the Actuarial Science profession, as well as, its corresponding program in Temple University. This was a year of record-breaking: over 100 students were in competition, with monetary prizes totaling $1,000. The students competed in two separate brackets with different examinations; freshmen with sophomores and juniors with seniors.

The 3rd Annual Date Auction

The 3rd Annual Date Auction

On Thursday, April 10, 2008, Gamma Iota Sigma held its 3rd Annual Date Auction. This event is always one of our best events, both in terms of fund-raising as well as in membership attendance. This year, we raised over $1,200, with all proceeds going to our charity of choice, Neighborhood Bike Works. This year was also the first time we teamed up with another fraternity for the occasion. In this case, our fellow Fox Business School student professional organization Beta Alpha Psi, the Honors Accounting organization, "donated" several of their members to put on the auctioning block.
