SurPASS Tip of the Month

NIH Will Continue to Accept Preliminary Data as Post-Submission Material Through August/October 2021 Councils

In recognition of the fact that COVID-19 may still be adversely affecting the ability of applicants to generate preliminary data, NIH will continue to accept a one-page update with preliminary data as post-submission materials for applications submitted for the August/October 2021 council (beginning with applications submitted for the January 25, 2021, due date for Summer 2021 review meetings), ONLY if the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) used for submission allowed preliminary data in the application (NOT-OD-20-179).

Clinical Research Tips of the Month

While it is imperative to add new study staff to projects in eBridge as soon as possible (i.e., prior to engagement in research activities for a study), it is a good idea to review current study staff of ongoing projects about once a month to remove anyone that is no longer working on the study.

Printing ICFs directly from OnCore or eBridge is a good way for all study staff to ensure they are using the most current IRB-approved version. Pre-printing copies and storing them in bulk can result in noncompliance, especially during times of amendments and continuing progress reports.

GRANT$ Alert

This requirement includes that the core team is made up of CoPIs from at least two different CTSI partner institutions: Children’s Wisconsin, Froedtert Hospital, Marquette University, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee School of Engineering, UW-Milwaukee, Versiti, and Zablocki VA Medical Center.

MCW Office of Research Limited Needs Funding Opportunity
Up to $30,000
Proposals Due: February 12, 2021

The Office of Research is accepting proposals for its spring 2021 Limited Needs Grant Funding opportunity, which provides limited needs funding to enable or augment research studies requiring additional resources to support the work. The maximum award amount is $30,000. The request must contain a description of the equipment software to be used, and it must be in support of an enhancement to a new or ongoing study. Funding is provided by the AHW Endowment through an investment in the Office of Research.

American Heart Association Career Development Award
$231,000
Proposal due in eBridge: February 9, 2021

Supports highly promising healthcare and academic professionals, in the early years of one’s first professional appointment, to explore innovative questions or pilot studies that will provide preliminary data and training necessary to assure the applicant’s future success as a research scientist.

The award will develop the research skills to support and greatly enhance the awardee’s chances to obtain and retain a high-quality career position.

Spencer Foundation Small Research Grants
Up to $50,000
Proposal due in eBridge: February 22, 2021

The Small Research Grants Program supports education research projects that will contribute to the improvement of education, broadly conceived, with budgets up to $50,000 for projects ranging from one to five years. We accept applications three times per year.

This program is “field-initiated” in that proposal submissions are not in response to a specific request for a particular research topic, discipline, design, method, or location. Our goal for this program is to support rigorous, intellectually ambitious and technically sound research that is relevant to the most pressing questions and compelling opportunities in education.

ASCRS Career Development Award
$75,000/year for two years
Proposal due in eBridge: March 8, 2021

The goal of the CDA is to provide young surgeons with the support necessary for the initiation and development of an academic career in colorectal surgery. As opposed to the LPG awards, the CDA focuses on career development and mentorship of the individual rather than solely on the research proposal. The award is intended for the academic investigator demonstrating significant creativity in research relevant to the pathophysiology or management of diseases of the colon, rectum, anus or small bowel.
