Greetings from your Community BoardMessage from the ChairKia ora koutou, School holidays are here again and there's heaps of fun events and activities around town for you and the kids to enjoy. It was great to see such a huge turn out for the Matariki Fireworks Spectacular last weekend, which marked the end of the light festival, Tīrama Mai. Our Board has been getting out and about in the community, meeting the wonderful people who are the recipients of this year's Community Service Awards. Thank you all for helping make our community a better place. Stay together, look after one another. Highlights from our latest meetingSince we last got in touch, our Community Board met on Monday 12 July. Staff are also working with the North Beach Resident's Association and the North Beach Surf Life Saving Club to identify options for the storage and use of Beach Wheelchairs, so everyone can access the beach. You can read the minutes for more details of these items and other topics, and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here. New "pup up café" for Red ZoneDoggies and their humans will have a new space to play, connect and enjoy some treats once The Mobile Barkery is set up in the Burwood Red Zone later next month. Te Tira Kāhikuhiku recently approved $10,542 funding to The Barkery to install a weekend pup-up café and canine enrichment area on the corner of New Brighton Road and Brooker Avenue. The dog-friendly café will sit right in the Red Zone, with a free to use hire-able training space for rescue's and dog professionals, an off-leash sensory den, and of course a delicious human and canine menu. The Barkery works closely with local dog adoption agencies Dogwatch, NZ Chihuahua Rescue and Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue and they'll showcase adoptable dogs and info about the adoption process. By engaging the public around a mutual compassion toward dogs, The Barkery looks to be a powerful vehicle for responsible dog ownership and canine rescue in Ōtautahi. Later this month, we’ll start drilling two new deep-water wells. Parts of this work will be noisy, with some noise and vibration coming from heavy machinery as the new wells are drilled, however our contractors will be working their hardest to keep disruptions to residents to a minimum. The upgrade is part of a wider programme of work to upgrade the city’s water supply network to ensure safe and secure drinking water for residents. Read more on Newsline or see the latest start works notice for more details. Hawkins Road / Lower Styx Road / Marshland Road - intersection & bridge upgradeOur contractors have been busy with various parts of this project over the past few months. The bridge widening works are well underway, with all of the precast beams (to support the two new lanes) now complete. There's temporary traffic management in place to enable a safe working environment for crew and construction machinery. As the new bridge deck is being built, there will be further temporary traffic management changes to construct the new roads. Thank you all for your patience while we complete this project.
