Click here January 2020 Impact Newsletter CPC Community Members Provide Testimony in Support of Mixed-Use Project at City Council Zoning Subcommittee Hearing On Thursday, January 30th, more than 100 staff and community members filled the City Council Chambers for testimony on CPC's mixed use project at the City Council’s Zoning Subcommittee Hearing. Ten partner organizations and 6 community members of CPC Project Reach testified in support of our project. The Zoning Subcommittee votes on February 12th and the Land Use Committee votes on February 13th on whether to advance CPC's project to the entire City Council on February 27th. EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong. CPC Receives $5,000 Grant from Investors Foundation to Support Immigrant YouthCPC is proud to announce receiving a $5,000 grant from the Investors Foundation at New York City. The grant was announced on January 21st and will help further CPC Project Gateway's work to increase college access in our communities. CPC Manhattan Learn & Earn Program Cooks for Seniors at Hong Ning Senior HousingIn light of recent holidays and birthdays, CPC's Manhattan Learn and Earn youth utilized the Hong Ning Senior Housing kitchen on January 23rd to prepare a few dishes and to celebrate with the senior residents. Winner of CPC Project Gateway's Share Your Story Series: "Lukewarm Chicken Tenders" The winner of CPC Project Gateway's Share Your Story Series: First Week of College is a story titled "Lukewarm Chicken Tenders." The short story was submitted by a recent graduate of SUNY University at Buffalo (UB). It recalls their first week of college, along with challenging feelings of being alone and far from home. CPC Project Gateway Hosts College Discovery Day at Hunter CollegeOn Thursday, January 22nd, CPC Project Gateway collaborated with Hunter College AANAPISI Project (HCAP) to provide an interactive and engaging "College Discovery Day" experience for our high school students at the City University of New York - Hunter College. FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age. CPC Chrystie Street Raises $1,400 in Rice Bowl CampaignThe kids at CPC Chrystie Street School Age Child Care Center ended 2019 by giving back. They participated in a Rice Bowls campaign to collect money to provide food for children living in 58 home orphanages in nine countries. CPC Brooklyn Community Services Hosts Auditions for Annual Children's Traditional Cultural Outfit ContestMany young children lined up to audition for the annual Children Traditional Cultural Outfit Contest on January 11th. Parents brought their children to audition in front of a panel of judges. Outfits were judged for creativity and presentation. President & CEO Wayne Ho Joins Panel Discussion on Meeting Needs of Older Adults CPC President and CEO Wayne Ho joined leaders of the senior services field for a panel discussion hosted by the Center for an Urban Future on January 13th. Remarks from Wayne noted the need for more job training programs, economic security programs, and language programs to support the growing number of older adults with needs that aren’t being met today. Judy Ah-Yune Co-Facilitates NYC Administration for Children's Services TrainingJudy Ah-Yune, CPC Director of Community Services, co-facilitated two trainings to NYC Administration for Children's Services staff on providing culturally competent, linguistically appropriate services for Asian American children and their families. One workshop was conducted in Brooklyn on November 21st and the other in Queens on December 6th. CPC Nan Shan Senior Center Hosts Lunar New Year CelebrationOn January 23rd, CPC Nan Shan Senior Services celebrated the Lunar New Year with 500 community members, honorees, and local officials, including Congresswoman Grace Meng, Acting Queens Borough President Sharon Lee and Council Member Donovan Richards. CPC Brooklyn Community Services Celebrates Lunar New Year On Saturday, February 1st, the 8th day of the Lunar New Year, CPC Brooklyn Community Services celebrated the rich heritage and traditions of Asian culture. This year is the Year of the Rat, the first animal in the zodiac cycle. Friends, family, and community members from all around the neighborhood enjoyed the festivities, including tons of giveaways, games, and activities for everyone. We engage with individuals to plan and develop their career paths because professional success is critical for economic independence. CPC Policy and Advocacy Priorities - New York State Fiscal Year 2020-21 CPC's policy agenda for New York State is informed by our annual listening tour and survey of staff and community members. It includes support for policies seeking immigrant justice, healthcare access, housing and mobility, economic equity, representation for marginalized communities, to strengthen nonprofits and more. CPC X Hispanic Federation: Puerto Rico Earthquake AidJust after a little over two years since Hurricane Maria devastated the island, Puerto Ricans are now struggling with the effects of another natural disaster. You can join us in supporting the Hispanic Federation to meet immediate and long-term recovery needs. Flushing Community Advisory Group Deliberates on Community Challenges and SolutionsOn January 7th, members of the public and the Flushing Community Advisory Group, part of the Flushing Mobility LABs Collaborative, met to deliberate on community issues and to propose possible solutions. CPC Statement on the Supreme Court Upholding the Public Charge RuleCPC is opposed to the Supreme Court upholding the public charge rule, announced on January 27th, as a systematic attack on low-income, immigrant families, and communities of color. CPC Joins No Hate, No Fear Solidarity March Against Anti-SemitismCPC staff and community members joined the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, UJA-Federation of New York, Jewish community leaders and allies on Sunday, January 5th for a rally and march in solidarity against recent anti-Semitic attacks. CPC Employment Services Hosts Third Open House for Census Bureau JobsOn January 10th, more than 35 community members attended a special open house at the Manhattan Community Center to learn more about jobs at the U.S. Census Bureau. Community members were given a presentation by the Census Bureau team on the importance of participating in the upcoming Census in April. CPC Participates in the Complete The Count Campaign for Census 2020On January 14th, CPC participated in the Complete the Count Campaign for Census 2020! This citywide campaign is the nation’s largest and most diverse coordinated municipal campaign to achieve a complete and accurate count in the 2020 Census. CPC Hosts Information Session for Open PositionsOn January 31st, staff from CPC's Multi-Social Services, Community Health Services, Education and Career Services, and Childhood Development Services programs discussed current opportunities available at CPC program sites.
