FELICITY GROOM & LONG LOST BROTHERS VIDEO CLIP LAUNCH @ GEISHA BAR, SUNDAY AUGUST 12

In his 1863 essay ‘The Painter of Modern Life,’ Charles Baudelaire bangs on about the joy of convalescence. The thrill of growing healthy when one has been unwell: it is a state of renewed childhood, says Baudelaire, a state whereby one experiences more vividly than usual the wonder of things, however trivial. I’ve spent the last week struggling against the dreaded “Influenza Masculina” virus, and only now is it beginning to recede into the shadows. So I become the convalescent: not quite Baudelaire’s convalescent (“a genius for whom no edge of life is blunted”), but a convalescent nonetheless, eager to reclaim stolen time, to drink in the fizzy qualia the world’s had clutched to its chest, to have my eyes and ears zapped and soothed. First I celebrate with three coffees of different kinds. There is the Mexican Café de Olla, before a...

a model life

When I was young, my father would encourage me to do modelling. Like any father, he thought I was the most beautiful girl in the world, I was his gorgeous princess etc, but I never truly went for it because I didn’t quiiiite trust his judgement (he was my stupid dorky dad after all), and I was more interested in theatre anyway. He didn’t press it, never signed me up for competitions and couldn’t afford to get me photo-shoots or anything, so the idea was left, and I went about my childhood with the understanding that being pretty seemed like it was a good thing to be, but I wasn’t much interested in it and always wanted piercings and tattoos anyways, so fuck you Dad etc.

Devil in Disguise: Preview of The Polite Gentleman at The Blue Room Theatre

When you look at consistent WA artists who have maintained a standard of original and well-constructed work it’s hard to go past Mark Storan. His one man cabaret A Druken Cabaret has travelled around the world, along with his newer works Killing Nellie. Last year’s collaboration with Deckchair theatre also saw Storan creatre the very entertaining and standout production of Lorelei. So it becomes easier and easier with his track record of beautifully dark cabaret shows to speak about the next from his pen and with the gravelled voiced maestro on stage.

Freo Love Fest

at mojos bar, FREMANTLE

Freo Love Fest is a celebration of Freo Love! There are more original music venues in Fremantle than there are in the rest of the metro area combined. One thing that can’t be denied is that Fremantle is now Music City WA.

To take the event into paroxysms of dancing rhythms will be Freo's popular party starters - DILIP N THE DAVs, a band who are very firmly entwined in the fabric of local music love. The diverse array of music on offer will also include Samba drumming with BATUQUE BACANA, led by Mike Boase from the Beleza Samba School. Also on stage will be French reggae and rhythms by SOL-R, a musical project by well regarded French born musician and circus performer Bruno. DREAM TREE COLLECTIVE are a truly Freo flavoured group of musicians using reggae, jazz and grooves to spread the message. DJ SCREECH, a busy DJ with soul sounds will keep the vibe lovin.  For a joyous communal celebration of all that makes Freo what it is, best get along to the inaugural Freo Love Fest. The event will then rotate to other local original music venues with two planned over the summer season.

Entry is $15 from 8pm - 1am.

Runner special acoustic performance

at The Ellington JAZZ CLUB, PERTH

Thursday, August 30

RUNNER play The Ellington as a follow on show from their blissful & mesmerizing show which closed the 300ppl attendance show at Guildford Grammar Chapel.

The challenges of playing an entirely acoustic show in a musical world usually filled with layers of guitar effects proved an enticing prospect for rising local outfit Runner. The band pulled key elements from their songs and attached them to foundations of strings and voice to produce a rich set to draw last month's HUSH show to a close in the packed Chapel of St Mary and St George.

Those that missed the event will have another chance to catch Runner in this unusual and insightful form at the Ellington Jazz Club

Thursday August 30, where with more time to prepare they will be digging deeper to find more flourishes to fit more polished modern surrounds. Supports are THE FLOWER DRUMS & THE SHALLOWS!

Tickets are $15 available presale thru the Ellington website www.ellingtonjazz.com.au
