Women with breast cancer can have their radiation therapy time reduced from six weeks of daily treatments to just one single treatment immediately following a lumpectomy. "This is a huge game-changer for breast cancer treatment," said James Edney, MD, surgical oncologist at The Nebraska Medical Center. Plastic surgeon Frederick Durden Jr., MD, uses a breast reconstruction technique that uses a woman’s own tissue to reconstruct the breasts.
Nationally, only 25 to 30 percent of women who have a mastectomy undergo reconstruction. Dr. Durden hopes to raise that number not only by providing another surgical option, but by doing a better job of educating women at the right time.
