Celebration

Will you or a loved one be celebrating a birthday, anniversary or special life moment.  Consider asking your guests to contribute to the Hilda Gregory Bursary Fund in honour of your celebration.  In keeping with our tradition that no child will be turned away from the school due to an ability to pay, we are pleased to say that this fund helps a child attend CHSC annually. Contact info@childrenshearing.ca to learn more.

Loud Shirt Day

Thank you to our friends, families and workplace groups who helped us raise over $20,000 through our 2nd annual Loud Shirt Day this past May.

We are grateful for the sponsor support from The Bay, Park Place Foundation, Phonak Canada, OTO Hearing Ltd, Aim Technologies, CTV, Vancouver Sun, Jack FM and FUN FM.

Watch for 2012 event details soon.

Talk about what you know.

Has the school made a difference in your life?  There are multiple opportunities through the year to speak with organizations and individuals who want to know about our accomplishments and our on-going needs.  If you are interested in being involved in the CHSC Speakers Bureau, please let us know at info@childrenshearing.ca

Spirit Day

The last Friday of every month everyone is invited to wear their CHSC school tees in support of school spirit!  Lets see lots of support from our parents, kids and staff!

Paint the Wall

CHSC mainstream kids are going to be painting a children's mural at the Centre on October 15th.  Watch for results in future issues!

Welcome to the 2011/12 school year!

Whether you are an alumni, professional in the deaf and hard of hearing field, a volunteer, donor, and/or a parent of one of our many students, we are pleased to share with you the exciting happenings at Children's Hearing and Speech Centre of BC (formerly Vancouver Oral Center) via our e-newsletter. One we aspire to have packed with stories, fun and information about this incredible school.

Since 1963 when Hilda Gregory and parents started the Centre, we have been successfully teaching deaf and hard of hearing children from around BC to listen and talk. The daily accomplishments we see with our work are incredibly inspiring for us and even more rewarding for the children and their parents.

Join us in giving deaf and hard of hearing children a voice....their voice!

Ground breaking work receives TELUS Award

TELUS Vancouver Celebration of Giving was held on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at the TELUS House Vancouver on Robson Street where Children’s Hearing and Speech Centre of BC (CHSC) was presented with the TELUS Innovation Award for Vancouver, which recognizes “lasting and sustainable impact on the local community.”

CHSC’s Stepping Out program was recognized with a $5000 grant for providing deaf and hard of hearing children in remote communities of BC the same opportunities to learn to talk as those in the Lower Mainland.  Read More: http://www.childrenshearing.ca/announcements__news/

Talking Tips

This issue's tip comes from one of our newest staff members, Michelle Johnson, who is a speech and language pathologist. Michelle says expand your child's vocabulary by introducing a new word to a daily routine.

Introducing synonyms or higher level vocabulary are great ways to boost your child's language development. New words are learned during everyday activities. So, if you want to help your child learn the word "lukewarm", you could say, "The bath water is lukewarm - it's not too hot, just a little warm." Repeat the word every time you perform that routine. Then plan how to use the word in other situations. For example, you could use lukewarm in relation to tea or coffee or even soup! Help your child understand more about the word when you use it by adding short explanations. For example, "I like my tea to be very hot. Lukewarm tea isn't hot enough and it doesn't taste good." Garden Greats

One day this past summer, two lovely ladies showed up at the school with garden gloves, rakes and a whole lot of energy. After several hours of good honest labour the front gardens were taking shape. Thanks to board of directors member, Loretta (right) and her sister Judy for the help.

There are so many ways to help support the Centre including gardening. Interested in getting involved?  We have a list of opportunities such as art & music therapy, events, and speakers bureau. Contact info@childrenshearing.ca and we can find a spot for you too.

Oh lá lá Paris!

Special thank you to parents, Coreen Geddes and Jodie Sunley for securing thousands of dollars in items for the upcoming 46th annual Endeavour Society Gala Auction and Dinner. CHSC has been a benefactor from this marquee gala event for several years and last year alone raised over $23,000 to support the schools funding needs.

Between families, board members and staff we gathered quite a collection of wine to contribute to the auction.  Thank you!

This Paris themed event is taking place on Saturday November 19, 2011 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.  There are still tickets available if you are interested in attending. It has some of the most unique and sought after items in town.

As well, we will be looking for new members to join our auction committee for 2012.   For more information contact sleclair@childrenshearing.ca or 604-437-0255 ext 228
