Stoptober 2014 is here! Members of the public can now sign up to take on the 28-day quit smoking challenge. After a successful Stoptober 2013, with 28,000 people in the North West signing up to quit, more than any other region outside of London, we were excited to have the National Stoptober launch roadshow take place in Manchester on Monday (8th).You can watch the short film from the day here.
The Stoptober roadshow also visited Cumbria this week (9th) and will visit Liverpool and Blackpool later in the month. The roadshow is touring England with the Comedy Fitness Brothers to encourage people to get involved in the campaign and ask people to share their own humorous experiences of quitting smoking or supporting others.

New figures from ASH show that Councils in the NW are paying more than £91m a year to help people with smoking-related illnesses to live in their own homes. Individuals also face a bill of over £67m to cover the cost of their own care. This means that more than £158m is spent unnecessarily on social care every year as a result of smoking. Read more about the figures here and view the local figures here.

Hi and welcome to your August eNews. We have had a busy month preparing for the Stoptober launch and it was great to watch people stopping and signing up for the 2014 challenge in Piccadilly Gardens on Monday and during the roadshow in Carlisle on Tuesday.
We hope to see many more sign ups across the North West in the coming weeks and are encouraging all smokers in the region to take on the challenge this year.
It has also been interesting this month to see ASH's new figures on the costs of smoking to social care services, reaffirming the need to keep investing in tobacco control to alleviate future budget pressures on local authorities.
