We are pleased to announce a full schedule of programs for the spring 2019 semester, including events from the Emerging Scholar Series, Race, Medicine, and Social Justice Research Cluster, the Advanced Knowledges Working Group, the Carceral State Reading Group, and the Working Out Loud: Audio Storytelling Workshop. We hope you can plan a visit to CSSJ soon as we will curate two new exhibitions in our gallery space at 94 Waterman Street. The first, Memory Works, features paintings by 2019 Heimark Artist-in-Residence, Renold Laurent, a Haitian artist based in Boston. Laurent’s work examines how different materials, from oil and acrylic paint to coffee grounds, enter into artistic dialogue with one another and make new meanings across space and time. We hope you can join us for the opening reception on February 15, 2019. The second, Memory Dishes, highlights the meals and cooking practices of fives families within African Diaspora communities in Providence. Using contemporary storytelling, archival materials, and culinary objects, Memory Dishes explores how a recipe can illuminate the ways people use food to connect to both their present and past. We hope that you can join us for the opening reception on May 24, 2019, part of the CSSJ’s Commencement program. To see a fuller schedule of our upcoming programs, please brown.edu/slaveryjustice. Please contact Geralyn Ducady at gducady@rihs.org to register for the workshop and/or the exhibit opening. Over the last six years CSSJ’s work has helped to shape important conversations on and off campus around the history and memories of racial slavery both in America and globally. This pioneering work would not be possible without the sustained commitment of our supporters. Learn more about one of the CSSJ's supporters. |
