1.  Geoff Vogt's summary

August has been a huge month for the ILF. The Board decided which grant applicants will become Scholars and for the first time ever had to choose a Scholar who epitomises ILF values as the recipient of the inaugural Colin J Peters AM Memorial Award. Planning for COVID safety at the awards ceremony has added an extra layer of complication.

This month’s bulletin contains some fabulous offers.

Our COVID19 survey generated such a huge response that I am afraid analysis will take longer than hoped. Grant Wilckens provided a brilliant insight into the G’Day groups response which is included now.  The high interest in COVID19 indicates there should be strong demand for non-touch Sanitiser Dispensers and locally made surgical face masks at special prices for Scholars. In the Classified Ad section you will also find great offers on shoes, wine, air conditioning assessments and spring cleaning.

Holla-Fresh are seeking a good source of compostable packaging for their magnificent herbs.

We have a bottle of quality Scholar wine for the first correct answer to our quiz.

Our first post COVID19 function, a cocktail function on Thursday this week booked out so quickly that extra capacity had to be arranged. Be quick if you wish to hear about leadership in extreme circumstances from Katie Sarah.

Invitations for the 21 September Awards Ceremony will be out soon. See more below.

We are organising a tour of the Detmold factory (where mask production was commenced less than three months from concept) and networking for October followed by a Mitsubishi Drive day, dates to be advised.

Ever wondered what it is like to be soldier? As an army reservist I can tell you it won’t hurt (much). Give it a go for a bit of safe rewarding fun.

2.  COVID19 Scholar Questionnaire

Thanks to the Scholars who responded to the COVID19 Survey.

We had a huge response and analysis of the large volume of data will take some time. The survey responses offer an overview of the diverse impacts of the corona virus on Scholars’ enterprises, delivers insights into effectively navigating the pandemic and highlights essential tools for recovery.

Complete summaries will be provided to those who participated in coming weeks while an overview will be circulated in the Bulletin.

3.  Promote your product or service to other Scholars

In the interests of supporting fellow South Australian businesses, Scholars are encouraged to promote their products to fellow Scholars in the Bulletin.

New entries will need to be lodged by 5 pm Friday 25 September and must be no more than 50 words. The entry can be repeated upon request for one further month without modification. After that a fresh edited or new entry will be required. Links to your website can be included. Special offers for Scholars only are encouraged.

9.  Grant Wilckens - Leading through a crisis.

Celebrating a strong first half of the FY20 financial year, little did I know that ahead of me lay the biggest challenge of my career. As a tourism business with an ambitious strategy for growth and a network of near 300 properties across Australia, a pandemic certainly wasn’t in our annual plan.

Emerging from COVID-19, I’ve reflected on how the Stanford Executive Leadership Course I completed in 2014 helped me to navigate the curve ball that none of us saw coming. More than just surviving, the G’DAY Group is looking ahead at the most exciting period of growth yet.

In 2014, together with other global business leaders, I had the opportunity to become a stronger and more effective leader and drive meaningful strategic and cultural change in our business through an ILF Grant. The skills learnt during this program and via ongoing learning with ILF have been invaluable as the organisation has grown over the years, as we have developed the bench strength of our executive team and, of course, as we have faced the challenges of COVID-19.

With the pandemic hitting tourism businesses hard, we took action early. Our crisis management team shifted to a COVID-19 focus with safety, people, operations and communication working collaboratively to manage fast moving change. We have been fortunate that as our business has grown we have solidified the skills and experience in our leadership suite and built a culture of empowerment – meaning our team could take strong action fast without being hampered by unnecessary internal red tape
