208 FUNDRAISER @ DADA RECORDS, SATURDAY MAY 05

Do-it-yourself music scenes – characterized by artist-driven venues and events, as well as a hands-on, holistic approach – these are often avenues for eluding the creative restrictions, red tape, rigid routines and general bullshirt that can accompany commercial venues and the music “industry.” Usually it works, too: domestic or non-profit settings for gigs, a sense of cooperative community, and artistic freedom can make for exciting times and fertile creative ground. But such scenes are not immune from the trials of the “real world,” and sometimes they come under threat. Such is the way with 208s, the fabled Maylands house of punk, which has recently been the brunt of noise complaints and requires a fresh lick o’ soundproofing if its legacy is to continue. That’s when the...

language: myths and lies

Someone told me recently that Spaniards pronounce “Ibiza” as “Ibitha” and “Barcelona” as “Barthelona” because a King or a Prince at some point in the country’s history had a lisp, and the people of Spain were told to pronounce it like him so he didn’t feel bad about his speech impediment. I was excited about this tantalizing little nugget, so decided to look into it further. Ego changing language, absolute power etc, ohmahgahd, the intrigue! But my first google search on the topic turned up a myriad of Spanish language experts having a bitch about this belief, as it is in fact an urban myth, one of those fun ones where every reacts as I did, doesn’t bother to check it out, and passes it on to their drinking buddies during conversations at the pub.

Now down to bidness. I’m feeling a little woozy, because me and Matt Acorn are living on $2 a day for food and drink this week. It sounds easy, but it isn’t. But it’s surely going to help our spirits.

HUssle Hussle

at Mojos Bar, Fremantle

Hip Hop is in the House for the Hussle Hussle night. This month’s baller lineup features the very best lyricists Perth has to offer and a dope DJ all the way from Sydney. One of Sydney's premier hip hop DJ's, DJ Ology, will be playin' a party hip hop set.

Ol Wright & Delirious, two of Freo's favourite MC's will be putting on one of their signature high voltage performances. Cheeky, funny and engaging story tellers, Ol Wright & Delirious in collaboration are dynamite.

Next up, The Empty Cup is a maestro with an extraordinary musical vision. Having supported the likes of Akil (Jurassic 5) and Sade, The Empty Cup (composer/producer/vocalist) demonstrates with ease and skill why he's a major force in Perth hip hop right now. One of Perth's most popular hip hop acts,

The Stoops, will be kickin it live at Hussle. Comprised of crafty wordsmiths Roc Walla & Pronto and their DJ, Arms In Motion, these young bucks are energetic, fun and unpretentious. Having recently performed to sold out crowds supporting Pete Rock, Kurtis Blow and The Herd, these guys have become rather pro at working big crowds. On the night, they will be joined by a couple of very special guest singers.

Another talented all rounder, Wisdom 2th, will be performing a one man comedy/rap show with his laptop and mini keyboard. Clever raps combined with smooth, pimp daddy dance moves make for some highly entertaining viewing - and he has awesome hair!

Mini Art Mart presents Carly Nasso

at ruck rover general store, mt lawley

Carly Nasso has had 20 years of exhibiting diminutive, collaged paintings and drawings of curious characters.

After living all her life in the city, Carly and her young family moved to a small Mid Western town on the edge of the wheatbelt in Western Australia. These works are directly influenced by the experience.

These new, one-off works are created with an array of materials including felt, paper, pencil, felt pen, crayon and paint.

The unusual characters are sometimes animalistic and not quite human. They exist in a world where nature and science combine with fantasy and emotion.

Carly is exhibiting at Mini Art Mart, inside Ruck Rover General Store, through May 2012.

Ruck Rover General Store, Shop 4 / 595 Beaufort St, Mt Lawley  WA  6050

Metamorphosis (Group Exhibition)

at free range gallery, perth

Metamorphosis; a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one.

Curated by Perth artist Marijke Loosjes, this exhibition focuses on the notion of influence within the artistic world, more importantly the influence artists have on one another. It can range from harsh derivatives to works of art with invisible guidance.

Twelve artists were chosen to participate, paired together, one artist created a piece based around the theme of Metamorphosis, the other artist then responded to this piece. The result being two works of art, in different mediums yet with influential ties. The viewer is able to study the relationship between the pairs, within this structure the concepts are isolated and exposed.

Ideas have always been built upon, changed, made intimate. They constantly evolve and take on new forms, Metamorphosis is an inquiry into this conceptual transmutation.

Artists: Bonnie Boogaard, Calliope Bridge, Alira Callaghan, Shaun Ferraloro, Kate Greenaway, Kia Groom, Marijke Loosjes, Tatjana Pilkington, Jessica Sorci, Fedor Valiev, Lance Ward, Tim Watson

Parrramatta Girls

at old mill theatre, perth

Real-life stories of former inmates at the notorious Parramatta Girls’ Training School in NSW have been combined to create a tragic and humorous yet uplifting play, making its WA premiere at the Old Mill Theatre this May.

Written by Alana Valentine and directed by Siobhan O’Gara, Parramatta Girls follows the story of eight girls at their 40-year reunion.

The girls were innocent victims of a harsh regime but had their own ways of coping with the system that oppressed them, trying to make good in tough times. When the system spat them out, they became the mothers, sisters, work mates and wives of Australia.

Parramatta Girls plays at 8pm, May 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 23, 24, 25 and 26 with a 2pm matinee May 20.

Tickets are $20, $15 concession – book on 9367 8719 or oldmilltheatre@iinet.net.au.

Stirling Players presents Face to Face

at stirling theatre, innaloo

A well-known Australian play will be presented with fresh eyes when young and emerging director Brendan Ellis brings David Williamson’s Face to Face to the Stirling Players stage in May.

As the first part of Williamson’s Jack Manning Trilogy, this dramatic and character-driven play takes its format in a realistic setting of ‘community conferencing.’

When a young construction worker rams into the back of his boss’s Mercedes in a fit of anger at being sacked, he is given the opportunity to discuss his actions in a community conference, rather than going straight to court.

This face-to-face confrontation between the young man, his boss, his boss's wife, co-workers, best mate and mother lifts the lid not only on his dysfunctional life but on their workplace dirty laundry, turning all of their lives upside down.

Community conferencing - an alternative method of justice that is relatively new to Australia - is explored by Williamson in this engaging and heartfelt play which celebrates the strength of community over our rigid and often seemingly unfair court system.

Face to Face plays at Stirling Theatre, Morris Place, Innaloo over 11-13, 17-20, 24-26 May 2012. All performances begin at 8pm, except for Sunday matinees at 2pm.

Bookings can be made from Tuesday 10 April 2012 through Morris News on 9440 1040. Tickets are $20 full, $18 concession and $14 members, with discounted group bookings available through Morris News.

This play contains some strong language and is suitable for mature audiences only.
