Some highlights of our meeting included receiving our Area Report for September, which outlines all the great work being done in our Board area. Mayor pays tribute to former Councillor Sally BuckMayor Lianne Dalziel has paid tribute to former Christchurch City Councillor Sally Buck, who has died following a long battle with cancer. Mayor Dalziel says Sally's passing is a huge loss for the city, the Central ward community and her family. Green thumbs for Heathcote Valley school studentsSenior students of Heathcote Valley School spent four days of environmental investigation and planting in Birdsey Reserve last month, under the guidance of local volunteer-extraordinaire John Marsh, Christchurch City Council ranger Heidi Wilton and enviroschools co-ordinator Matt Standford. Join an upcoming volunteer planting eventSteam Wharf Stream ReserveCelebrate World Rivers Day and World Fish Migration Day. Hear the story of Steam Wharf Stream, its history, restoration and what’s happening with our new community whitebait project. We’ll show you what we found during last summer’s two inanga/whitebait surveys. Join us for morning tea after the talk. Date: Sunday 27 September Meet at the Alport Place entrance. Sumner CoastCare ProjectMany hands make light work, so come and join us for our Sumner Dunes working bee. We'll be planting, pruning, mulching and watering. Date: Saturday 26 September Meet on the dunes between Cave Rock and the Sumner Surf Lifesaving building. Don't forget to wear suitable footwear, a hat and garden gloves. An update on the Woolston Village upgradeIt’s great to see the new footpath, kerb and channel built outside St Johns Church on the northern side of Ferry Road. Once our roading team are finished in this area, they will switch to the south side of Ferry Road and continue the streetscape upgrade. Community Library shares love for WoolstonZoey Downs is the president of the Woolston Community Library and a proud Woolston resident. Zoey says: We have a lovely wee library here and are trying to encourage more people to come in and visit us. We are open Monday to Friday from 11-3pm and Saturday from 10-12pm. The top 5 things I like about Woolston - well the first one would have to be our wonderful library! Life in Christchurch Transport surveyThe city's transport network should provide you and your family with access to a range of locations and activities. Tell us what you think about transport in the city. Community Facilities Network PlanWe want to support the network of community centres and halls across Christchurch city and Banks Peninsula so these spaces are well used, and people come together there for lots of different activities. Mud Play Mornings at Richmond Community GardenCome along to Richmond Community Garden from 10 am every Saturday for some mud play fun! Participation is free and open to all, and donations towards the ongoing nature play developments at the Richmond Community Garden are also gratefully accepted. Look out for the Central Ward Community Board by-electionOctober's General Election isn't the only big vote coming up in the next few weeks. Voting papers for the Central Ward Community Board by-election will start turning up in people’s letterboxes from Thursday 24 September Unlike the General Election, this by-election is being conducted by postal vote. If you're enrolled in the Central Ward you'll receive a voting form, a candidate profile booklet, and a pre-paid return envelope. You can now read all about the seven candidates competing for the spot representing the Central Ward on the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board. Voting closes at noon on Friday 16 October, and the progress results will be announced that afternoon - one day before the General Election. Plan to reclaim streets for playSome residential Christchurch streets will be temporarily closed to traffic and turned into play areas for children in a series of pop-up events funded by the Government. Treasure hunt fun te reo teaching toolA treasure hunt for kids that combines te reo Māori with learning about Ōtautahi Christchurch’s artworks, nature and heritage launched this week. Coinciding with Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), this free Taonga Hunt will run through the school holidays until Sunday 11 October.
