Olerup, Inc. presented the extended HLA typing portfolio at this year's ASHI

At the recently held ASHI meeting in New Orleans, Olerup SSP and Conexio presented the HLA typing portfolio distributed in the US by Olerup Inc. The focus of the symposium was the recently signed global distribution agreement between Conexio and Olerup SSP effective May 1st, 2011. Through this agreement Olerup SSP AB acquired the distribution and marketing rights for the Conexio SBT Resolver™ product line which includes locus specific assays for HLA-A, B, C, DRB1, DQB1 and DPB1, a comprehensive set of HARPs™ and the new Assign™ SBT v3.6+ sequence analysis software.

Olerup SSP® and SBT Resolver™ to work hand in hand

“With the inclusion of the SBT Resolver™ product line into our business we now have an excellent product portfolio to further strengthen our presence in the HLA labs. Being a leading supplier to the HLA community and now offering two types of typing techniques gives us possibilities to help both the low- to medium- as well as the high through put HLA typing labs to further enhance HLA typing according to their specific needs” Anna Hedlund, Head of R&D at Olerup SSP AB explained.

Our two product lines work perfectly as standalone product lines and will continue to do so also in the future. Moreover, the benefits of combining Olerup SSP® products with SBT Resolver™ kits in daily work will be even more obvious to the users when we within the next year first introduce SSP kits tailored to resolve ambiguities due to polymorphisms outside of the target areas of the SBT Resolver™. Hand in hand with this, we are also preparing our respective software, Helmberg SCORE™ and Assign™, to in a next step be able to communicate with each other in order to share result data and so forth. This development is something that we see as a natural step forward and would like to be able to offer labs in order to further facilitate the daily work, she continues.

Introducing the new Helmberg-SCORE™

Helmberg-SCORE™ has been the supportive software of Olerup SSP® typing kits since 1998. The program has, in close cooperation with Olerup SSP AB, been in constant development by the creator Assoc. Professor Wolfgang Helmberg. This development have over the years ensured Olerup SSP® and Helmberg-SCORE™ users to continuously be able to have a sophisticated and up-to-date software solution that always has been able to meet the developments within the HLA field. Recent achievement has been that Helmberg-SCORE™ was the first software that was updated with the new HLA nomenclature in April 2010. “Bottom line is to facilitate for users and to be able to handle the continuously expanding world of HLA alleles in a smart and practical way“says Anna Hedlund.

At this year’s ASHI meeting Assoc. Professor Wolfgang Helmberg presented the latest developments:

  • The program release to come in mid January, 2012 is Access 07-based with a modern interface
  • For the basic user there will be a shortcut setting available with a clean look, ensuring an easy workflow when going from patient/sample entry to typing result and report. With an easy switch the more sophisticated user will be able go from the shortcut setting to the standard setting featuring all the options as we know them today

Moreover, features have been added to further facilitate in result handling and to help reduce ambiguities:

  • To interpretation wise make the most of entered typing results, to reflect the full capacity of the Olerup SSP® kit design and to reduce ambiguities; the software is now able to handle band size calling in lanes with multiple band lengths
  • As a way to sort or reduce different kinds of ambiguities that are due to polymorphisms located outside of regions encoding the peptide binding domains, P- and G group nomenclature is now also available in result handling and reports

Conexio SBT Resolver™, a new addition to the Olerup Portfolio

Hayley Hogan, Head of R&D at Conexio Pty Ltd described how Conexio has been instrumental in the development of SBT as a routine tissue typing method since the description of the single tube assay for HLA DRB1 in 1998.

Hayley described the current SBT Resolver™ product range including a comprehensive coverage of exons in class I and class II HLA genes and a portfolio of 84 different HARPs™.  Conexio will also be releasing a number of SBT products in the next six months including a new DRB1 assay that includes full exon 2 coverage, full exon 2 DRB1 GSA’s, B57 GSA and DRB3, DRB4 and DRB5 assays.

The new Assign™ SBT v3.6+,

Assign™ has been the bench mark in SBT analysis software since 2002. The latest version Assign™ SBT v3.6+ sets a new standard for SBT sequence analysis software and offers the following new features:

Improved Update process
  • Reference libraries
  • License keys
  • NMDP Codes
Common and Well Documented Allele flags
  • CWD alleles indicated on screen and reports
Analysis of non-coding regions
  • Improves typing accuracy
  • Color coded regions

InDel analysis

  • Improved analysis of insertions and deletions

G group and P group report functions

  • Report management includes G- and P-group options

Interactive HARPs reports

  • User defined limits
  • G-group HARPs report option

Carla Wirtz, Product and Training specialist with Olerup, Inc. and Conexio Pty Ltd performed a detailed presentation of the Assign™ SBT v3.6+ software.  She explained how the new features, together with the previously well-established content, will be of value for users.  Olerup SSP AB and its sales organizations has, in cooperation with Conexio Pty Ltd, set up an extensive support and training network.  This group will provide demonstrations and extensive training to laboratories on the new SBT Resolver™ portfolio and Assign™ SBT v3.6+.  For further details please visit our web page at www.olerup.com or www.conexio-genomics.com.
