Giacometti Exhibition Opens Aug 31

Sculptures, paintings, prints, drawings and decorative works by enigmatic artist Alberto Giacometti will be on view in Giacometti: Memory and Presence, opening August 31 in the museum’s fourth-floor gallery. The exhibition will reveal the artistic evolution of Giacometti, a key figure in 20th-century art, and illuminate the sense of intimacy that is reflected in works depicting his family, other artists and important cultural and intellectual figures. The exhibition runs through February 8, 2013.

Ongoing Exhibitions

The exhibition Picasso: Select Prints and Ceramics is on view in the second-floor gallery through August 23 (extended from its original July 23 closing date). The show features 29 works dating from the 1930s to the 1960s. Mid-Century Modernism: 1957 and the Bechtler Collection is also on view through August 23 (four days earlier than its original closing date) in the museum’s fourth-floor gallery. The exhibition focuses on 1957, the height of the Bechtler family’s art acquisitions. Featured are artworks by 28 artists including Max Ernst, Barbara Hepworth and Sam Francis.

Jazz at the Bechtler This Friday

The Ziad Jazz Quartet plays selections by innovative tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins this Friday, August 3 during Jazz at the Bechtler. Songs include Pent-Up House, St. Thomas, Oleo and Tenor Madness. Concert is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are free for museum members and $12 for non-members. Cash bar. Note: A DNC-related event scheduled at Levine Center for the Arts (where the Bechtler is located) will prohibit the museum from offering Jazz at the Bechtler in September.

Abstract Designs of Frank Gehry

The Bechtler’s Architecture + Film series presents Sketches of Frank Gehry August 17. The documentary by the late Academy-Award winning director Sydney Pollack reveals a personal side of Frank Gehry, an architect best known for bringing a sculptor’s sensibility and a deconstructive aesthetic to his designs. A presentation by Marley Carroll, Vice President of Design at Clark Nexsen, will precede the screening. The event reception begins at 6 p.m. The discussion and film (run time: 83 minutes) begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Cash bar and free light bites. A Bowl that Makes a Statement

Museum Galleries Closed Aug 24-30

To accommodate the installation of exhibitions on the second, third and fourth floors of the museum, all galleries will be closed August 24 through August 30. However, the museum store and café will be open regular hours. During this week, the Bechtler will offer free art-making activities on the museum plaza from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

Museum Hours During DNC

The Bechtler is excited to welcome visitors to the Democratic National Convention the first week of September. Because of DNC-related events taking place at the museum, days and hours of operation will be adjusted September 1 through 7. If you plan to visit the museum during the convention, please check the Bechtler website for updated information. The adjusted days/hours are: Open regular hours September 1; closed September 2; open regular hours during CarolinaFest 2012 September 3 (free admission); open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. September 4; closed September 5; closed September 6; open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. September 7. All dates and times are subject to change.

Free Admission for Military Families

All active-duty military personnel and their families receive free admission to the Bechtler now through Labor Day, September 3, as part of Blue Star Museums. The program is collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and more than 1,500 museums in the U.S. Free admission does not include museum programs and special events. Also participating in Charlotte are The Mint Museum and Levine Museum of the New South.
