Editor's note

Despite most of us living in cities, Australia is a farming nation. For 200 years we’ve idealised the fields of wheat, herds of sheep, and Akubras and Blundstones. But as Tony Hughes-D'Aeth writes, in the face of environmental degradation an increasing number of writers are challenging this relationship, from Bruce Pascoe’s Dark Emu to Charles Massy’s Call of the Reed Warbler. Importantly, many are recognising the way Aboriginal Australians worked the land before Europeans arrived.

Friday essay: Dark Emu and the blindness of Australian agriculture

Tony Hughes-D'Aeth, University of Western Australia
