Christchurch City Council

Greetings from your Community Board

Message from the Chair

Kia ora koutou,
It's the count down to summer holidays with plenty of events and activities coming up around town, including beautiful new artworks on display at our own Christchurch Art Gallery. With International Volunteers Day coming up this Saturday 5 December, its a good time to give thanks to all our wonderful volunteers for the work they do in our community. As we head into the warmer months, the Council has launched their "Water like you oughta” campaign, which encourages people to think carefully about how and when they water their gardens.
If you're up for a challenge, check out Council's new Bin Good Game and test your knowledge of what items belong in your red, yellow and green wheelie bins. It's a fun way to tackle a serious issue and help minimise the amount of waste going to landfill. Remember to take a look at the new Long Term Plan portal and the challenges and opportunities we’re facing as we develop our 10-year budget.
Stay together, look after one another.

Chair of the Community Board

Board Chair, Alexandra Davids

Highlights of our latest meeting

Our Community Board met on Monday 30 November. Some highlights of our meeting included hearing from local residents as part of our Public Forum and Deputations by Appointment.
We're recommending that Christchurch City Council  approve a proposed new changing rooms building to be built in North Hagley Park, within the ground area leased to the North Hagley Community, Sports & Recreation Trust Board. As part of this, we're also recommending a public consultation process so everyone has the opportunity to have their say.
Our board approved the landscape plan for the renewal of the playground at Risingholme Park and approved proposed road names for a new development at 356 Brougham Street in Sydenham. We approved a grant of $10,000 from our 2020/21 Discretionary Response Fund to Roimata Commons Trust towards its Communal Tunnel Houses project and a further $12,000 towards their Toha Kai project. We also received our Waikura/Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board Area Report for November 2020, which gives us an overview of all the great things happening in our community. You can read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here.

A flourishing Community Garden for Refugees

A small community garden at the Phillipstown Community Hub has become a space for refugee families to meet and connect, while learning about growing food and gardening. The Canterbury Refugee Resettlement and Resource Centre, based at Phillipstown Community Hub, has a small community garden right next to the Hub's own vegetable garden.  Families are welcome to come and meet others from their home countries, as well as others who are adapting to a new country and society.

Tribute to our local volunteers

In the lead-up to International Volunteer Day, we want to say thank you to all the volunteers in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula for the work they do.

We asked Michael Reynolds from Roimata Food Commons what he loves about volunteering:

“Empowering people to grow food themselves; it’s an active service to our community. To the city actually, because we need it. Someone needs to demonstrate how to do things differently.”

Community invited to help develop Linwood Pool activity program

Local recreation providers and key local organisations are helping put together the activity program for the pool and multi-purpose community room. Council staff are engaging with groups to find out what activities people would like to participate. They're also exploring days and times potential women's and men's only sessions in response to feedback staff received from the consultation process.

Proposed change in play for Hagley Park facilities

Proposed new changing rooms for North Hagley Park are a step closer following Waikura/Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board support.
The Community Board has recommended that the Christchurch City Council agrees to start public consultation on a proposed new building and a lease variation so that the new building can sit in an area overseen by the North Hagley Community, Sports and Recreation Trust Board.

Christchurch gardeners urged to ‘water like you oughta’

The Garden City’s head gardener is urging Christchurch residents to be mindful of their outdoor water use this summer so the city’s water supply network doesn’t come under too much pressure. Director of the Botanic Gardens Wolfgang Bopp is part of this year’s “Water like you oughta” campaign, which encourages people to think carefully about how and when they water their gardens.

Christmas pause for Woolston Village upgrade

Happy holidays from the Woolston Village upgrade team. There's lots going on around the Village and over the past few weeks we've been making progress on the south side of Ferry Road, laying the beautiful new eel pavers, setting up the Kea Crossing outside St Anne's School and installing the new road crossing signal poles near Maronan Street. We've completed the drainage work on the corner of Portman Street and installed three new tree pits. We'll pave this area after Christmas, once our paving team are back on deck, and for now, we'll lay asphalt to make it safe. On behalf of the team, we wish you a safe and happy Christmas and New Year break and thank you for your patience while we make Woolston more beautiful.
You can read more about the project in our latest newsletter.

Beware algal blooms in Christchurch ponds and wetlands

People and their pets are being urged to avoid stormwater ponds and wetlands in Christchurch as they could contain the potentially toxic algae, cyanobacteria.

The algae typically presents as dark brown or black mats in the water. Pets that show signs of illness after coming into contact with algal mats should be taken to a vet immediately.

Our stormwater basins provide new wetland habitats for our native flora and fauna to flourish, including endangered and protected bird species.  You can walk your dog around the basins, but please be mindful these wetlands are home to native animals and ensure your dog doesn’t chase the wildlife.
