Issue 14
  1. An elegant coffee brewer
  2. A Gmail add-on for shortcuts and templates
  3. The famous clock, now as a watch
  4. A converter for all the things
  5. A Lightning USB cable for your key ring
  6. A lightweight launch bar for the Mac

Hi everyone!

I'm sending out this week's issue a day ahead of the usual schedule as I've got a busy few days ahead. I'm in the process of finalising the files of the next issue of Offscreen, sending them to the printer later this week. (By the way, you can subscribe here.) It's always nerve-wracking to reach that crucial point of no return that exists with real/physical products only. Anyway, enjoy this issue of The Modern Desk. I'll be a lot more relaxed this time next week — if all goes according to plan. ;)

This Weekʼs Line-Up

An elegant coffee brewer
01

Good coffee (and how we choose to make it) is one of those trendy and slightly decadent things we talk a lot about these days. I like to believe I'm somewhere in the center on the coffee snobbery scale, but a beautiful brewing device gets my attention every time. I really like the look of KONE (currently on back order). For the full 'artisanal' experience (because why not) check out this collection of behind-the-scenes photos.

A Gmail add-on for shortcuts and templates
02

As many of you know, I'm a big fan of working in the browser. I've been using Gmail in Chrome for all of my email needs for years. About a month ago I added the Gorgias Chrome extension which helps me insert often-used templates and shortcuts. When replying, I type 'h' and press tab to get 'Hi firstname'. A few simple shortcuts that my poor wrist is very thankful for.

The famous clock, now as a watch
03

If you're a fan of the popular QLOCKTWO wall clock, you'll probably also like this smaller version for your wrist. I know I've been featuring quite a few watches here lately (and more to come) — clearly a response to the Apple Watch hype. Until Apple makes a watch that doesn't need daily charging, all of these 'traditional' watches somehow still seem superior to me.

A converter for all the things
04

After smallpdf, here's another amazingly versatile utitility app that runs in your browser and is free to use (for the moment anyway). CloudConvert converts pretty much any file format: audio, video, ebooks, images, spreadsheets, vector files... the list of compatible formats is impressive.

A Lightning USB cable for your key ring
05

Added to my wishlist: a super short Apple Lightning to USB cable that goes on my key ring. I always carry the (standard) Lightning cable with me in my backpack and unknotting it is one of those daily little annoyances.

A lightweight launch bar for the Mac
06

I'm a fan and paying pro-user of Alfred App. I use it several times throughout the day. Though I have to admit its feature richness can quickly become a bit overwhelming. Flashlight looks like a great, lightweight alternative. The nice thing is that it's an open platform for the Spotlight search feature that already exists on every Mac. I assume there will be lots more plugins appearing soon.
