Chinese-American Planning Council, Inc.

In Memory of Mr. Charles P. Wang (1939-2026)

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Mr. Charles P. Wang, former Executive Director of the Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC).

Coming to the United States in 1965 to pursue higher education, Mr. Wang earned a master's degree in history from St. John's University and a certificate in Nonprofit Management from New York University.

From 1968 to 1989, Mr. Wang served at CPC in various roles, including Managing Director and Executive Director, helping shape CPC into the nation’s largest Asian American social services organization. He later served as President of China Institute in America from 1989 to 1993 and was a founding member of the Committee of 100.

Mr. Wang was a pioneer in Asian American political participation. He was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the Asian American Panel of the President's Commission on Mental Health and later by President George H.W. Bush as Vice Chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. He also served on multiple New York State task forces.

Throughout his life, Mr. Wang received over 22 honors, including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and numerous Distinguished Service Awards.

Mr. Wang will be deeply missed. His legacy lives on in the communities he uplifted and the generations he inspired.
