THE WEEK AHEAD at the UN SECURITY COUNCIL

18 June - 22 June 2018

On Monday (18 June), Special Envoy Martin Griffiths will brief Security Council members in consultations on his efforts to resume political negotiations in Yemen and to mediate an agreement on Hodeidah.

On Tuesday (19 June), the Council is expected to hold its monthly meeting on the Middle East (Israel/Palestine). Special Coordinator Nickolay Mladenov is expected to provide the briefing, which will be followed by consultations.

Also on Tuesday, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix is expected to brief members on the work of the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the Golan Heights in consultations.

There will be a discussion under “any other business”, also on Tuesday, on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This is likely to include a briefing from Special Representative Leila Zerrougui on the latest developments regarding the electoral process in the DRC and the implementation of the 31 December 2016 agreement.

ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda will provide the semi-annual briefing on the court’s work in Darfur on Wednesday (20 June).

On Thursday (21 June), a Department of Peacekeeping Operations representative and Special Representative of the AU to the Central African Republic Bédializoun Moussa Nebie are expected to brief the Council on the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic.

The Security Council and General Assembly will elect a judge to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday (22 June), due to the recent resignation of Judge Hisashi Owada (Japan).

At the subsidiary body level, the 1718 Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Sanctions Committee will hold a meeting with the Western European and Others Group on gaps and challenges with respect to the implementation of sanctions.

The Informal Working Group on Documentation and Other Procedural Questions may hold a formal meeting during the week to discuss a draft paper on recommendations from the 6 February open debate on working methods (S/PV.8175).
