Living a life of worship

How do we teach our children about worship? It’s easy to think about singing and praising through music, which is fantastic! It’s a great way to tell God that we love him and about our desire to give him everything. But how do we show our children that worship goes deeper, that it is about giving God all we are and have?

This month we’re thinking about ways to engage our children in worship – through music, but also thinking about ways they can worship in the ordinary parts of life.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship.

Ideas this month

Thank you
Saying thank you is a brilliant way to worship God. Every time we remember that God is our provider and that every good and perfect gift comes from him, we give him glory.

Try asking your congregation to say three thank yous every day for a week. You will all be amazed at how much you have to worship God for!

Whole life worship
Read this great article from Sam Hargreaves on the importance of remembering that everyday life can be an act of worship.

Celebrate
The latest interview in our Talking Faith series is with Ali and Gareth Gilkeson from the worship band Rend Collective. Find out how they engage their three little ones with worship through fun, dance parties and celebration! How could you make some of your worship in church fun?

Reflection

Talking about worship is an opportunity to show how a relationship with God affects every part of our lives. It’s so easy to compartmentalise all the different things we do – working, having fun and the ‘spiritual’ stuff. We can do the same in our church services, separating the sung worship from the message and the children’s work … but actually our worship is offering all those things to God, to bring him glory, and explaining that to the children in our churches as well.

Are there opportunities on a Sunday to ask parents to take a minute to explain to their kids what worshipping God looks like? They may not always understand the words of a song, or why we sing or take an offering, but we can help them to see how these different elements become acts of worship in our everyday lives.

Take some time this month to remind yourself what living a life of worship might look like, and think about the opportunities you have in church to help parents do the same for their children.
