Go to www.gov.ie/brexit Brexit FAQsFood businesses have been in touch with the FSAI asking how Brexit will affect them – here are a couple of the questions we have been asked: What are EU import controls on foods? EU food import controls are checks on foods at the point of entry into the EU. Import controls are a legal requirement of EU food law that ensures food safety and consumer protection. Import controls can be a check of import documentation, an identity check at the port/airport, and/or a physical check of the load. What foods of animal origin are subject to Import controls vary according to the food type. In addition to customs requirements, imports of some foods must comply with a set of additional checks and import requirements. If you are importing foods containing animal products such as meat, milk, cheese, eggs, or honey, you need to register as an importer with the Dept. of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM). Notification to DAFM and submission of documentation through the TRACES system at least 24 hours in advance of importing is required. Further information is available here.
