Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the May 2019 Domestic Tax Paid Estimate. Below find a few key points provided by our Chief Economist, Michael Uhrich:

  • Domestic beer volume decreased by 1.5% during May 2019, while consumer spending on domestic beer increased by an estimated 0.3%.
  • May’s volume decline can be mostly explained by the difference in average temperatures across most of the country, this year versus last.  May 2018 was among the warmest the U.S. had ever experienced, while May 2019 was among the coolest the U.S. has been during that month.
  • Domestic FMBs, including hard seltzers, continue to show strong growth, gaining nearly a point of share among domestic beer brands during May.
